PMC-Sierra Announces Secure Wired and Wireless VoIP Phone Reference Platform
Business Wire, Jan 5, 2006
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- MSP2020-Based VoIP Phone Reference Platform Delivers Best-in-Class Voice Quality, Reliability and Enhanced Security for High Performance Home and Enterprise Applications
PMC-Sierra, Inc. (Nasdaq:PMCS) today announced the availability of a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Phone reference platform that enables Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)-like performance with toll-quality voice services and enhanced security. The compact integrated design features PMC-Sierra's MIPS(R)-powered MSP2020 Secure VoIP processor and certified Voice Processing Software, allowing Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) to meet market demands for:
--consumer and enterprise IP phones (see Figure 1) with high quality service and very competitive bill of materials (BOM) costs; and
--secure Wi-Fi phones (see Figure 2) that overcome reliability and privacy concerns associated with Internet-based telephone services.
"High quality handset solutions are key endpoints in successful service-provider deployment of VoIP and related IP-enabled services to their customers," said Dino Bekis, vice president of marketing and applications for PMC-Sierra's Communication Products Division. "Our latest reference platform for the MSP product family showcases the flexibility and adaptability of our VoIP solutions for value-added customer products in this fast-moving, innovative market."
PSTN-Equivalent Quality
Leveraging PMC-Sierra's Voice Processing Software technology, the MSP2020 VoIP processor brings the same levels of voice quality proven with MSP4000 at China Netcom Labs, China Telecommunication Technology Labs and Korea's Telecommunications Technology Association. This latest IP phone reference platform provides the ability to deliver reliable, secure, high-quality VoIP services through enterprise- and consumer-grade IP and Wi-Fi Phones.
Adding IP Phones to PMC-Sierra's family of VoIP reference designs enables ODMs and OEMs to create a broad range of products, from IP Phones to Voice-Enabled Wi-Fi Routers, all using a common software architecture and application programming interfaces (APIs).
Enhanced VoIP Performance
PMC-Sierra's MSP2020 device is the foundation of a VoIP Phone Reference Platform that provides a new level of price and performance for secure VoIP products. The MSP2020 eliminates the need for a separate processor, voice processing DSP, security chip and multiple Ethernet MACs. The fully integrated design simplifies the design complexity of the phone application and reduces the overall BOM, enabling OEMs and service providers to quickly bring differentiated VoIP phone products to market.
Together with Acoustic Technologies' SoundClear(R)-enabled ATH3100 Full-Duplex Voice Processor, including embedded audio codec, acoustic echo cancellation, noise cancellation and sound enhancement, end users experience a crystal clear and echo free conversation whether using a handset or speakerphone.
"Communication is key to every-day business and understanding," said Jim Jacot, VP of sales and marketing at Acoustic Technologies. "The Acoustic Technologies SoundClear(R) line of patented full-duplex communication and echo cancellation solutions combined with PMC's MSP family of products is enabling crucial advancements in telecommunication voice quality, ensuring clearer conversation, without delay or noise interruption."
Enhanced VoIP Security
Securing telephone calls over the public Internet is a major concern with potential VoIP subscribers, so OEMs and ODMs must be able to offer security-enabled products to their end customers. The MSP2020 has an integrated hardware security engine, which encrypts call set-up messages and voice channel streams for secure transmission over the Internet. This hardware security accelerator performs on the fly encryption and decryption of secure voice channels without the need for a high-speed microprocessor or DSP. Combined with the MIPS-based voice processor, the device is a highly optimized processor for VoIP Phone applications.
