Vivox Delivers Voice to Languagelab.Com Virtual Classrooms; New Immersive Language School Will Offer Live Voice Chat in ''Classrooms'' in Second Life
Business Wire, July 10, 2006
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- Vivox(TM), a pioneer in delivering real-time communication to online communities, today announced that its Vivox Precision Studio(TM) solution will power the Languagelab.com immersive language school built on the Second Life platform. Together, Vivox and Languagelab.com will provide an online learning community where educators and students can interact in a virtual environment using real-time voice chat to learn languages. Languagelab.com is presently in open beta.
Second Life, which boasts more than 280,000 participants around the world, is a 3D virtual world where users or "inhabitants" interact and live. Using the Second Life platform, Languagelab.com has created a ninety acre city with retail, residential, commercial, and cultural facilities. Here students will immerse themselves in a virtual environment that complements and serves as an alternative to the traditional ways of learning a language. By providing a variety of activities - from attending a business meeting to checking into a hotel - Languagelab.com is an ideal setting for learning to speak a foreign language.
By integrating Vivox's IP communication technology into its school, Languagelab.com will offer its participants high-quality voice capabilities that provide the same richness as real-life, face-to-face communication. Additionally, Vivox's Precision Studio platform simplifies the educational process. For example, the technology allows students to break into small groups and practice together. Teachers can rotate through those groups during learning sessions while experiencing high-quality voice communications throughout the process.
"Language immersion has long been recognized as the best method for learning a new language," said David Kaskel, Managing Director, Languagelab.com. "Unfortunately, for many people, the time and expense of traveling to a foreign locale for immersion simply isn't feasible. Working with Vivox, we can simulate that experience in a virtual world and take learning to the next level."
"Online communities rely on communication to thrive, but most Web-based communication is limited to text. Vivox enables live voice interactions that bring the nuance and intelligence of real-world communication to online communities," said Rob Seaver, CEO, Vivox. "These capabilities can benefit any Internet community, but they are clearly essential for online language learning - there's no better way to learn a language than to speak it with native speakers and other students. Together with Languagelab.com, we provide the students with a truly immersive language learning experience without having to leave their own living rooms."
