Schaeffer's S&P 500 Index Hot Stocks for Thursday, July 13, 2006:
A daily feature available on SchaeffersResearch.com is the "SPX Hot Stocks" column. Each afternoon, we will provide a list of the day's top-20 performing stocks in the S&P 500 Index (SPX - 1,249.70) as well as the bottom-20 names. Featured along with this table will be news that is moving some of the securities, including a look at Electronic Arts.
NOTE: Stocks trading under $5 per share have been eliminated from this listing of the top-20 and bottom-20 performing stocks.
The SPX was down 0.73 percent at last check, and only 100 of the 500 components of the index were ahead. Screens are awash with red, and the three major indices are down for the second day running.
Nevertheless some stocks are still advancing. Leading the way into the SPX winner's circle today is Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:ERTS), which announced a number of new game titles including offerings linked to The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, NFL football, The Godfather, and golfer Tiger Woods. Wall Street appears to like the news, although ERTS has struggled lately, pulling back 38 percent from a March 2005 high at $71.16.
Meanwhile, Citrix Systems (NASDAQ:CTXS) reported good news this morning. The firm, which makes products that allow computers and other digital devices to communicate securely across networks, has been named a Microsoft Partner of the Year. Although the stock has been in a two-month declining phase, it popped nicely today and it's holding onto all of its gains. In May, the stock hit the highest levels we have seen since June 2000, but it has since pulled back to the support of its 10-month moving average.
PepsiCo (NYSE:PEP) is gaining ground today, after the company reported second-quarter earnings of 80 cents per share, three cents better than the estimate. Revenue climbed 11.7 percent on a year-over-year basis to $8.6 billion.
Merrill Lynch trimmed Jones Apparel (NYSE:JNY) to "sell" from "neutral" this morning, citing diminished prospects for a sale, plus concerns over weakening fundamentals. The stock was down more than five percent when we grabbed our figures for this piece, and leads the way into the SPX loser's circle.
Finally, CIBC downgraded Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS) to "sector underperformer" from "sector performer" this morning, prompting a sharp gap lower on the open. The stock is currently trading below its 20-week moving average, an ascending trendline that it has not closed a week below since December. That's going to be one to watch tomorrow afternoon.
