"We are delighted to have the opportunity to present the current status of the disruptive technology which has been under development at Vitality Medical, having completed the engineering and preclinical development of three generations of the proposed product platform," says Nemati. "We firmly believe that the proposed product platform will represent a significant advance in the ever expanding market for male surgical sterilization."
David Acker, Sc.D., Chief Technology Officer of Vitality, adds, "The HIFU system under development at Vitality Medical incorporates the many unmet needs associated with conventional vasectomy procedures, in that it offers a low cost non-invasive procedure that is effective, patient friendly, and easy to use for the care provider, with an expected improved outcome and potential for reversibility."
Vasectomy, as a procedure for male surgical sterilization, is one of the most common methods of long-term male-directed contraception. In the United States, vasectomy is the most widely used method of contraception among couples of reproductive age, and internationally, approximately 42-60 million men or 5% of married couples of reproductive age rely on vasectomy as their contraceptive method of choice. Despite the success rate of vasectomy, and low incidence of morbidity and mortality associated with this procedure, female-directed surgical contraception, such as tubal ligation, are far more prevalent, largely due to men's fear of surgical procedures involving sensitive parts of the male anatomy, and the fear of complications. Vitality's solution ameliorates these concerns and offers a superior, non-invasive, patient friendly alternative to conventional vasectomy.
Vitality Medical Products, LLC, is a privately held development stage medical device company, based in San Diego, California, which was spun out of ProRhythm, Inc. (Setauket, NY). Three generations of Vitality's product design were developed at ProRhythm and validated through preclinical studies at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Vitality holds all the intellectual property rights to the technology for its targeted indications.
