PortalPlayer and ASUSTeK Join Forces to Bring Windows SideShow-Capable Notebooks to Market; Innovative Notebook Design Enables Always On Access to Personal Productivity Information and Entertainment

Business Wire, June 8, 2006

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- PortalPlayer, Inc. (Nasdaq:PLAY) and ASUSTeK Computer Inc. today announced at Computex Taipei 2006 that the two companies are working together to bring ASUS notebooks equipped with Windows SideShow and personal media displays to market. PortalPlayer, a leading developer of portable multimedia technology platforms, and ASUSTeK, a global provider of computers, communications and consumer electronics solutions, have teamed up to create a new generation of notebook computer that leverages the full capabilities of Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating system. Windows Vista includes a feature called Windows SideShow that enables a PDA-like second processor and display subsystem to be installed in a notebook to provide Always On access to critical data and multimedia content stored on the notebook. This second interface uses very little power and operates even when the notebook is off, significantly extending the useful life and capabilities of ASUSTeK's notebooks for its customers.

PortalPlayer's Preface(TM) technology platform provides the processor, firmware and specifications notebook manufacturers need to build a personal media display in a Windows SideShow-compatible notebook. Manufacturers, such as ASUSTeK, add their design, configuration and marketing expertise to create compelling new notebook implementations. The two companies are dedicated to delivering new systems that have the potential to change the way individuals manage their digital lives.

"PortalPlayer and ASUSTeK share a common vision of creating innovative products that people enjoy and love," said Tony Chen, general manager of the ASUS Notebook Business. "We are intrigued with the possible applications of a secondary display on our notebook computers and look forward to seeing how the development community will make use of this new interface."

"ASUSTeK is a worldwide force in the consumer computing industry," said Michael Maia, vice president and general manager of the Personal Media Display Division of PortalPlayer. "ASUSTeK has grown rapidly by consistently bringing new developments to market quickly. We are excited about working together with them in rolling out Preface and SideShow in several innovative new ways."

Preface-equipped notebooks from ASUSTeK have the potential to give individuals instant access to critical data such as e-mails, contacts and calendar no matter what power state the notebook is in (on, off, standby or hibernate). They are expected to provide users with instant access to multimedia content, including music and photos. The types and number of applications is expected to quickly grow as developers create new mini-applications or Gadgets that work with Windows Vista and Windows SideShow.

PortalPlayer expects Preface- and Windows SideShow-equipped solutions to be available with the upcoming release of Windows Vista.
