The New York Times Names Gerald Marzorati Assistant Managing Editor
Business Wire, March 21, 2006
NEW YORK -- The New York Times announced today that Gerald Marzorati, editor of The New York Times Magazine, has been named to the masthead as an assistant managing editor effective immediately. Mr. Marzorati will continue to oversee all editorial aspects of the Magazine and will continue to report to Executive Editor Bill Keller.
In making the announcement, Mr. Keller stated: "Gerry inherited a magazine and spawned a magazine group that includes a monthly luxury magazine, a budding sports magazine and a soon-to-be-twice-yearly real estate magazine. He is a welcome presence at every table where The Times's present and future are under discussion, and it is time that the importance and potential of the Magazines in the life of the newspaper, and Gerry's wide-ranging creative role, were recognized on the masthead."
In addition to his current responsibilities, Mr. Marzorati will help identify and develop the next generation of editors for the magazines and magazine-like sections of the newspaper, particularly from within the newspaper. He will also help bridge the Magazine and the newspaper on big enterprise reporting and he will work with the online staff in developing a unique Times Magazine presence on www.nytimes.com.
Gerald Marzorati, 52, was named editor of the The New York Times Magazine in 2003. Previously, he was the Magazine's editorial director since 1998. He served as articles editor of the Magazine from 1994, when he joined The Times, through 1998. Before joining The Times, he was editor, non-fiction, at The New Yorker magazine; deputy editor at Harper's magazine; and senior editor at The SoHo News.
Mr. Marzorati is the author of "A Painter of Darkness: Leon Golub and Our Times" (Viking/Penguin Press, 1990). His book won an American PEN award for a first book of non-fiction.
Mr. Marzorati received a B.A. degree in humanities from Villanova University, graduating with honors in 1975.
