eRx Collaborative Sponsors Expanded e-Prescribing Contract with Zix Corporation; PocketScript® Awarded Follow-on Contract for 500 Sponsored Prescribers
Business Wire, March 31, 2006
DALLAS -- Zix Corporation (ZixCorp(R)), (Nasdaq:ZIXI), the leader in hosted services for email encryption and e-prescribing, today announced the eRx Collaborative, sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA), Tufts Health Plan, and Neighborhood Health Plan, has expanded its e-prescribing contract with Zix Corporation in 2006 by sponsoring 400 additional licenses for e-prescribing deployments in Massachusetts. The contract also includes incentives to add an additional 100 sponsored licenses if ZixCorp achieves deployment and utilization performance targets.
Since the launch of the eRx Collaborative in 2003, physicians in the program have sent more than three million e-prescriptions, including 2.6 million in 2005 alone. A record 80,000 scripts were transmitted in one week last year. Zix Corporation's PocketScript solution enables physicians to write prescriptions electronically and send them directly to pharmacies through either a wireless handheld PDA or a secure Web site. The application includes formulary information, a drug reference guide, drug-to-drug and drug-to-allergy checking, and patient-specific drug-dispensed history lists. PocketScript provides greater legibility, improved communication for greater patient safety, lower costs, and improved office efficiency.
Physician participation across all PocketScript programs is growing, with more than 2000 active prescribers generating more than 100,000 electronic prescriptions per week. This milestone represents an increase of over 122 percent from the same period last year and up 25 percent since the beginning of 2006.
"We've been very pleased with the results of e-prescribing by our participating physicians," said Dr. Peter Goldbach of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. "ePrescribing has had a positive impact on formulary compliance, which can impact the affordability of health care. Most importantly, however, we're seeing a positive impact on patient safety. The eRx Collaborative has seen more than 5,500 changed prescriptions per month as a result of doctors being alerted to potentially adverse reactions for their patients, made possible, in part, by having the patient's drug histories available through the system. The success to date has allowed us to make this program available to even more physician members."
"Further extending our contract with the eRx Collaborative is a big step forward. This expansion comes on the heels of a detailed analysis of benefits conducted by the Collaborative and is evidence of customer commitment to continued e-prescribing investments," said Rick Spurr, chief executive officer for ZixCorp.
"The sponsors of the eRx Collaborative have been true champions for e-Prescribing initiatives in Massachusetts and around the nation. We're thrilled to grow our association with the eRx Collaborative and look forward to continued growth of e-prescribing participants in Massachusetts."
