SAN MATEO, Calif. -- Orbital Data, a leading provider of WAN optimization and application acceleration solutions, today announced the appointment of Jim Baker to the position of vice president of worldwide sales. With more than 30 years of high technology sales, sales management, product marketing and customer support experience, most recently as vice president of sales for the Americas for Packeteer, Inc. (NASDAQ:PKTR), Baker brings a strong background in all phases of direct and channel sales strategy, support and execution. In this position, he will be responsible for driving all of Orbital Data's sales efforts, on a global basis, with a particular focus on a rapid expansion of channel sales.

Baker brings to Orbital Data extensive experience in the WAN optimization and application acceleration industry and in developing sales programs directed at enterprise customers. In addition to a strong track record of accomplishments at start-up companies, Baker most recently spent seven years at Packeteer managing the company's sales efforts in North and South America. In this capacity, his team was a major contributor to increasing the company's revenues to more than $100 million and growing the company's customer base to more than 7,000 customers. Baker was particularly successful in establishing customer relationships with large enterprises with distributed IT operations.

"Jim is a proven leader with an extensive background in implementing effective sales programs to enterprise customers seeking WAN and application acceleration solutions," said Dick Pierce, CEO of Orbital Data. "As Orbital Data continues to deliver new and innovative products, Jim is perfectly suited to direct our sales efforts, especially as these solutions are now being more widely deployed by large enterprise organizations."

Prior to joining Packeteer, Baker served in VP of worldwide sales positions at Shomiti Systems, Inc., a developer of network analysis, monitoring, and fault diagnosis solutions for the LAN marketplace, and Lannet, Inc., an intelligent LAN hub manufacturer acquired by Madge Networks. In addition, Baker has also held senior sales management positions at Network Peripherals, Synoptics Communications and Tridata.

"The recent product introductions from Orbital Data, including the company's unique AutoOptimizer Engine and the industry's first software client, OrbitalEdge, have demonstrated that Orbital Data is committed to delivering new and innovative WAN optimization products for the enterprise market," said Jim Baker. "I look forward to working with the Orbital Data team as the company moves to execute an aggressive and exciting product roadmap as well as global channel programs."
