New Evans Data IDE Study Shows Borland Toolset Still a Powerhouse

Business Wire, March 7, 2006

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Evans Data Corp today announced the results of Developers' Choice -- IDEs, a study in which over 700 developers ranked the features and capabilities of nine top IDEs that they currently use. IBM's Rational Application Developer edged past Borland's JBuilder to receive the highest overall relative scores against top IDEs including Eclipse, Macromedia Studio MX, and Oracle Developer Suite. IDEs were ranked in 13 distinct categories including compiler/interpreter, debugger, editor, compiler performance, performance of resulting apps, ease of use, sample apps, and libraries/frameworks. The complete study can be downloaded free from Evans Data at http://evansdata.com/devchoice_ide.php.> "Borland's tools have long been loved by developers for their quality and high performance and that hasn't changed," said John Andrews, President of Evans Data. "The fact that Borland has put them on block provides an excellent opportunity for someone to upgrade their offerings."

While IBM's Rational Application developer achieved the highest score across the entire range of categories, Borland's JBuilder was ranked best for compiler/interpreter, debugger, profiler/optimizer, compiler performance, and performance of resulting apps. Visual Studio.NET, which is the most used IDE, had the best libraries/frameworks, while the fast growing open source Eclipse IDE had the best ability to integrate third party tools.

The Developers' Choice -- IDEs study, available for free download from Evans Data, is the precursor to a larger study Evans Data plans to conduct globally this Spring to assess developers' satisfaction with IDEs and their toolsets throughout the major geographic regions.
