LinuxLink by TimeSys Gains Traction in Embedded Linux Market; Over 2,000 Embedded Linux Developers Join, Leading Semiconductor Manufacturers Participate, Global Reseller Channels Added, New Features Launched
Business Wire, March 8, 2006
PITTSBURGH -- TimeSys(R) Corporation, the leading developer service provider for the embedded Linux market, today announced that LinuxLink by TimeSys(TM), the first continuously updated Web-based resource for embedded Linux development, has achieved significant growth since its introduction in August, 2005.
LinuxLink is an industry-changing delivery model, and the first commercial offering to support the majority of embedded developers who build and assemble their own commercial-grade custom Linux platform. The LinuxLink approach has been validated by embedded developers, semiconductor manufacturers and embedded solutions providers.
--Over 2,000 embedded developers have joined LinuxLink
--Freescale Semiconductor, Intel and MIPS Technologies, Inc. are delivering their latest Linux optimizations through LinuxLink
--Leading resellers AcSys, Fabiotec, Nissin Systems, Shresta and WESLAB are now selling and supporting LinuxLink in response to demand in key international markets
--Nearly 70 processors are now supported and new features and community support resources have been launched
Only LinuxLink delivers on-demand access to the latest processor-optimized Linux and components, a rich development environment and community support. This is a significant departure from commercial embedded Linux vendors that dictate feature sets and release schedules, resulting in platforms that diverge significantly from the Open Source community.
"LinuxLink fills the previously unmet need for a commercial resource that connects embedded developers with semiconductor manufacturers and the Open Source community in a meaningful way," said Larry Weidman, president and CEO of TimeSys. "With LinuxLink, embedded developers have the freedom to choose the resources that are relevant to their project in a flexible delivery model that meets the needs of development teams of any size."
Bob Rizza, senior firmware engineer at Tiernan, a Radyne company, is leading a team using LinuxLink to develop a router based on the XScale IXP425 processor from Intel(R) to provide Internet and telecommunications connectivity to developing nations. "With LinuxLink, we can download whatever we need, and don't have to create everything ourselves," he said. "The LinuxLink licensing model is much more flexible than proprietary Linux operating systems."
"LinuxLink provides our customers with a commercial resource for the latest Linux from MIPS Technologies, as well as packages, development tools and an interactive community support model to speed and simplify development," said John Wilkes, manager, strategic alliances, MIPS Technologies. "LinuxLink aids and empowers MIPS Technologies licensees and their customers in their efforts to create their own commercial-grade custom Linux platform."
"The TimeSys Developer Exchange provides an excellent experience of the Open Source collaboration model for all users and enables them to quickly and efficiently solve their embedded Linux development problems," said Thomas Gleixner, a well-known expert in embedded and real-time Linux. "Developer Exchange builds the bridge between commercial development requirements and the Open Source Bazaar, where TimeSys experts mediate between both worlds with active contributions to promote Linux as the operating system of choice for embedded development."
LinuxLink Growth Highlights
Subscribers: Over 2,000 embedded developers from around the globe have joined LinuxLink since its launch. The flexible delivery model and low entry cost of LinuxLink have been embraced by developers building commercial grade custom Linux platforms for all types of embedded devices across a wide range of industries.
Semiconductor Manufacturer Participation: Leading semiconductor manufactures including Freescale Semiconductor, Intel and MIPS Technologies have joined the TimeSys OnBoard Program(TM) to make their latest processor-optimized Linux optimizations available to developers in LinuxLink subscriptions. OnBoard partners also actively participate in the online, interactive forums housed in the Developer Exchange.
Global Reseller Participation: In response to growing demand for LinuxLink subscriptions in key international markets, TimeSys recently introduced a global Authorized Support and Service Partner Program. AcSys, Fabiotec, Nissin Systems, Shresta and WESLAB are selling and supporting LinuxLink in France, Israel, Greece, Turkey, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand.
LinuxLink Processor Support and Features: LinuxLink subscriptions are now available for nearly 70 processors, with new processors added on an ongoing basis. The Developer Exchange features new content including training webinars, tech tips and enhanced documentation. Discussion forums, site-wide search and team privilege administration are now available to enable the growing LinuxLink subscriber base to quickly and efficiently interact with TimeSys and the LinuxLink community.
