Leading Health and Wellness Publisher Rodale Enhances Productivity With Adobe Creative Suite and InDesign; Rodale Joins Roster of Major Content Companies Standardizing on the Adobe Creative Suite Family

Business Wire, May 22, 2006

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced that Rodale Inc., the authoritative source for trusted content in health and wellness around the world, has switched its magazine and book page design and layout processes to Adobe InDesign software and standardized its U.S.-based publishing processes on Adobe Creative Suite. With magazine properties and books published around the world, Rodale has adopted InDesign to help expedite print production workflows and provide a more fluid creative environment for layout artists and designers.

This adoption puts Rodale in a growing list of leading publishers that have standardized on InDesign for page design and layout, including Australian Consolidated Publishing, Future Network USA, Hearst Magazines, Lonely Planet Publications, McDougal-Littell and Meredith Corporation.

"Rodale designers are thrilled with the switch to InDesign because it offers new innovative features," said Jim Quaglio, business analyst for Rodale. "Our IT team likes the ease of adding new licenses as well as Adobe's excellent customer service."

Rodale is recognized for renowned lifestyle magazines such as Prevention, Runner's World, Men's Health, Women's Health, Best Life, Backpacker, Bicycling, Organic Gardening and Mountain Bike. Rodale also publishes highly acclaimed books on health, fitness, cooking, gardening, spirituality, and nature, such as The South Beach Diet series and soon-to-be-released An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore.

Rodale made its full conversion to 400 seats of InDesign CS over the course of one year, from October 2004 to October 2005, simultaneously with a company-wide upgrade to Mac OS X. Its freelance designers and external agencies made the switch as well. InDesign was created to make companies like Rodale more productive, enabling them to push the creative boundaries.

"Every day, publishers are discovering that InDesign offers a leap forward in productivity for designers and production artists," said Mark Hilton, vice president of Creative Suite Products at Adobe. "InDesign has fundamentally changed what publishers expect from their page layout software, and Adobe will continue to raise the bar for InDesign and the Adobe Creative Suite. Our goal is to enable publishers to keep creativity at the forefront of the publishing process while providing an industrial strength production workhorse."

Since moving to InDesign software, Rodale has developed a smooth workflow for designing professional layouts with sophisticated graphics and typography. Designers import both styled and unstyled Microsoft Word documents into InDesign layout templates, where they can easily combine artwork and imagery from native Illustrator and Photoshop files. The new creative environment is yielding productivity benefits. For instance, designers can incorporate drop shadows without the need to switch software applications to produce standout creative effects.
