Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center Ensures Patient Safety Using 2D Barcodes; Hand Held Products™ Dolphin 9500 mobile computers to read 2D barcoded wristbands and medication
Business Wire, May 22, 2006
SKANEATELES FALLS, N.Y. -- Hand Held Products, Inc., a leader in image-based mobile data collection systems in healthcare, announced that Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center (OLOL) has completed its installation of 270 Dolphin(R) 9500 mobile computers to administer medication. The ergonomic and durable mobile devices powered by Adaptus(TM) Imaging Technology, allow caregivers to safely provide service without disturbing patients.
OLOL, one of Louisiana's largest hospitals serving more than 600,000 patients annually through inpatient and outpatient services, has also replaced its linear barcode system with two-dimensional (2D) barcodes for patient and drug identification.
The Dolphin 9500s being used by OLOL feature the Cerner CareMobile(R) platform to access, document and transmit critical patient information in real time. Caregivers use a series of 2D barcodes placed on the patient wristband, medication packets, and infusion devices to execute a system for medication administration that ensures the "5 Rights" in patient safety are met:
--The right patient receives
--The right medication at
--The right time in
--The right dose via
--The right route
"Speaking from first-hand experience, our 2D barcode-based system, coupled with the mobile technology, has helped staff administer care without changing their workflow process," said Nancy Luttrell, CNS, Director Nursing Informatics, OLOL. "Most importantly, our patients have responded well and feel that they are being cared for in an efficient and safe high tech environment."
"The utilization of barcode technology - specifically 2D bar codes - in today's hospitals allows us to put our solutions to work in a truly problem-solving application," said Kevin Jost, CEO of Hand Held Products. "Nowhere else is data accuracy and ease of data acquisition more crucial than in the healthcare environment, and our goal is to provide medical staff with a solution that makes barcode reading and data communication fast and easy, enabling them to provide the highest level of care possible."
