USA TODAY and Gannett Partner with MobileVoiceControl to Bring Voice-Driven Mobile Search to BlackBerry
Business Wire, May 23, 2006
CINCINNATI -- USA TODAY and Gannett (NYSE:GCI) announced today that they have partnered with MobileVoiceControl, Inc. to bring natural voice access to USA TODAY's mobile content using BlackBerry(a) from Research In Motion (RIM) (Nasdaq:RIMM)(TSX:RIM).
The partnership enables BlackBerry users to search a vast array of information by simply pressing an assigned button on their device and speaking the request. The BlackBerry Browser(TM) is automatically launched and opened to a page displaying the requested content. Initially, USA TODAY will provide real-time national content in areas such as News, Money, Sports, Life and Weather. In the future, local content from Gannett newspaper and broadcast television stations will be available via the application. The solution is available on the Sprint Nationwide PCS Network.
MobileVoiceControl's patent-pending technology is easy to use and its search and recognition accuracy is unprecedented in the mobile environment. By simply saying commands into their BlackBerry, mobile users can now search for information including top stories, sports scores, weather forecasts, movie times, 411 information, stock quotes and more while they are on the go. The system also gives users the ability to dial by voice command, verbally add appointments to their calendars, and to dictate emails instead of typing them.
The system is downloadable to the user's BlackBerry handset over the air and does not require any user voice training. Most users are up and running in minutes.
"Mobile phones have always been a natural for speech recognition, but until now the technology did not exist to accurately and easily access this amount of information via speech," said Matt Jones, director of Mobile Products for USATODAY.com. "MobileVoiceControl is a leader in voice-driven mobile search and has developed a system that makes it very simple for users to request information on their mobile devices. This partnership is an excellent way to extend timely, relevant USA TODAY content and continue to meet our customer's needs for easy access to information while they are on the go."
"USA TODAY's trusted brand, broad array of content and commitment to bringing high quality applications to the mobile screen are very attractive to our users," said Steve Burns, President of MobileVoiceControl. "We are confident that BlackBerry users will enjoy the powerful yet, simple-to use, MobileVoice application."
"USA TODAY and MobileVoiceControl are bridging powerful technologies and rich content to further enhance the mobile experience for BlackBerry users," said Mark Guibert, Vice President, Corporate Marketing. "BlackBerry customers value the ability to access relevant, timely information on the go and USA TODAY's content provides an excellent fit."
