A 'perfect storm' of forces is compelling many businesses to rethink their network infrastructure. On the one hand, compliance and industry regulations mandate new procedures and processes for collecting and reporting data. On the other, corporate data is growing so exponentially that storage has become an issue. Yet, businesses must assiduously prevent network attacks that are increasingly more sophisticated.

In this session, Alan Paller, director of research at The SANS Institute, will provide his insight into many of the issues concerning compliance and security, including:

--Understanding who is attacking computer networks and how to better protect those systems

--Finding the sweet spot that connects compliance and security

--Challenges when a privileged user starts thinking like a hacker

--How system and software vendors are being 'persuaded' to take more responsibility

A distinguished security expert, Mr. Paller was one of the Internet leaders invited to the White House to meet with the president in the aftermath of the Yahoo and eBay denial of service (DoS) attacks in February 2000. He led that group's effort to develop and implement a consensus Roadmap to Defeating Distributed Denial of Service attacks. He was also the expert witness who helped the judge understand distributed DoS attacks at the MafiaBoy trial, and helped develop the Internet's early warning system, Internet Storm Center.
