Business Wire, Nov 14, 2006
Bill Shaw Named Publisher of SmartMoney Magazine
NEW YORK -- Hearst Magazines International President/CEO George Green today announced that Jay McGill, senior vice president and publisher of SmartMoney, has been named senior vice president of Hearst Magazines International. SmartMoney, The Wall Street Journal Magazine of Personal Business, is co-owned by Hearst Corporation and Dow Jones & Co. McGill will start in his new role on January 1, 2007, and will report to Green.
Additionally, Bill Shaw, formerly the general manager of SmartMoney.com since 2002, has been named publisher of SmartMoney magazine. Shaw will also begin his new role on January 1, and will report to Ed Finn, chairman and editorial director of SmartMoney.
McGill replaces Jorge Planas, who will retire at the end of the year. Planas spent 10 years at Hearst Magazines International, where he oversaw the European market and helped launch many editions of Hearst's well-known magazines, such as Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Esquire and Harper's BAZAAR.
Commenting on McGill's appointment, Green said: "With his depth of experience in the magazine market, Jay will be a great addition to the international division at Hearst and will help us continue to expand our brands around the world." He adds: "Jorge has done a tremendous job over the past decade and he will be greatly missed."
McGill added: "In the international magazine business, Hearst's prowess is unparalleled. This is a unique opportunity for me to help George grow Hearst's global franchises and I welcome it."
McGill has been with SmartMoney since 2003. He formerly served as vice president/publisher of Popular Mechanics and publisher of Country Living. Prior, McGill was a director of digital integration where he worked with Hearst titles, Hearst Interactive Media and advertisers to develop strategic relationships and explore new technology applications for the magazine division.
Commenting on Shaw's appointment as SmartMoney's publisher, Finn said: "Bill is one of the most creative ad executives I've ever worked with. I think his plan for serving clients and agencies through a combined magazine and Internet sales force is exactly right for the SmartMoney franchise and its robust digital platform."
During his time at SmartMoney.com, Shaw oversaw the Web site's transition to profitability. His responsibilities included advertising, licensing and subscription sales, audience growth and partnership development, as well as site operations. Prior to that role, he was the director of business development from 1999 to 2001 and then director of national advertising sales for SmartMoney.com from 2001 to 2002. Prior to joining Hearst in 1999, Shaw was an account executive for the ESPN network. He began his career in media at Saatchi & Saatchi as a media buyer in 1991.
"I am thrilled to take on this new role," said Shaw. "SmartMoney is a brand that easily spans the traditional publishing and online platforms and I'm looking forward to building this franchise."
