Centers for Disease Control Re-Enlists Unisys to Manage Major Data Center
Business Wire, Nov 2, 2006
Facility Plays Crucial Role in Helping CDC Enhance Application Availability, Disaster Recovery Capabilities and Analyze Bioterror-Related Information
BLUE BELL, Pa. -- Unisys Corporation (NYSE:UIS) today announced that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has awarded the company a contract to continue managing and expanding the capacity and capabilities of the data center that Unisys has been operating for the last three years. The new contract has a term of one base year, with four additional one-year options that are exercisable at the government's discretion. The contract has an estimated total value to Unisys of approximately $50 million; the first year is valued at approximately $10.8 million.
Following the events of Sept. 11, 2001, the CDC began an effort to upgrade its disaster recovery and operational continuity capabilities. The CDC enlisted Unisys expertise and managed services capabilities for a 24x7x365 mid-tier data center, designed to help improve the availability and security of information resources critical to CDC's fulfilling its mission of promoting public health and safety.
The new contract provides for expansion of the data center's capabilities, to include supporting the addition of several new applications to inform local, state and national public health officials and to support national preparedness.
The managed data center affords CDC the ability to effectively manage and attain high reliability, availability, and continuous operations, even in the face of adverse events such as hardware and software failures, communications disruptions, natural disasters and physical or electronic attacks.
"Selecting a managed service approach for its data center makes tremendous sense for CDC," said Ted Davies, managing partner, civilian agencies, Unisys Federal Systems. "By capitalizing on Unisys managed services expertise and world-class services delivery infrastructure, CDC can focus its own IT and operational resources on new ways to protect the health and welfare of the public it serves so effectively."
Forward Looking Statements
Any statements contained in this release that are not historical facts are forward-looking statements as defined in the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. All forward-looking statements rely on assumptions and are subject to various risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ materially from expectations. This is a cost reimbursement contract with a fixed profit. Statements in this release regarding the estimated value of the contract are predicated on the assumptions that the actual costs of performance will be consistent with the currently estimated costs and that the government will exercise all of the option years, which is entirely within the government's discretion. Further, because contracts with government agencies are terminable before the end of their terms and are subject to the availability of appropriated funds, the estimated values in this release are not guaranteed. Additional discussion of factors that could affect Unisys future results is contained in periodic filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
