Q1 Labs Survey Shows Network and Security Professionals Seeking One Solution That Combines SIEM and NBA Technologies
Business Wire, Oct 10, 2006
WALTHAM, Mass. -- Q1 Labs, a leading network security management company, surveyed over 200 companies to learn how they are managing network security today and the technology directions they want for the future. When compared to a similar survey taken in November of 2004, several trends become apparent:
The convergence of network and security organizations has continued with more people now reporting to converged organizations. The findings indicated that 31% say the responsibility for network security resides in the networking organization alone, up from 20%, while shared responsibility for security and networking has increased from 28% in 2004 to 35% now. Those companies where security responsibility lies with the security group alone held fairly steady at 20% in 2004 and 23% now.
This organizational convergence is reflected in a desire for enterprise-wide approaches to threat monitoring and management. When asked whether it is important to combine network behavior monitoring and security information monitoring in one solution, a resounding 70% agreed while only 8% disagreed. Market confusion may have driven the 22% who expressed no opinion. Clearly there is room for growth in the market. Responding companies indicated they are using either SIEM (11%) or Network Monitoring (28%) products to protect their networks.
When looking to purchase the products they will need for converged network and security management, 68% of responding companies agreed that "best of breed" and "defense in depth" are more important selection criteria than either "single vendor" or end-to-end" approaches, which total only 7% combined.
The issue is relevant to Q1 Labs because its QRadar[TM] network security management platform combines both SIEM and network behavior monitoring. It also offers the broadest set of multi-vendor surveillance data in the industry - both network flow data and security events - in one console. QRadar analyzes this data, prioritizes it and helps administrators to manage threats and policy compliance tasks from a single console. The issue is important to the industry because IT staffs are increasingly flooded by information, alerts and false positives from their network and security devices. These IT staffs need a platform that will help them to effectively monitor, store and prioritize network behavior and security information.
"This result confirms the direction Q1 Labs has been taking with the QRadar network security management platform," said Tom Turner, vice president of marketing at Q1 Labs. "We understand that convergence is occurring at many levels: product, operational group, and enterprise architecture, With this in mind, there has to be a way to monitor both network and security effectively, regardless of the vendor technologies deployed in the environment."
This survey was asked of attendees to a webcast co-sponsored by the Enterprise Strategy Group and Q1 Labs entitled "Self Defending Networks for the Real World."
