Nano Science and Technology Institute, in Collaboration with U.S. FDA, To Convene "Health & Environment Summit on Nano" at Nanotech 2007

Event To Gather Science, Industry, and Government Leaders at Nation's Leading Nanotech Conference

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Nano Science and Technology Institute (NSTI) in collaboration with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will convene a special "Health & Environmental Summit on Nano" to assist with the FDA's fact-finding programs for Nanotechnology in Consumer Goods, including drugs, biologics, food and cosmetics, NSTI officials announced today.

NSTI is one of the country's leading communities of nanotechnology scientists, university researchers and commercial firms, and is the producer of the nanotech Conference and Exposition, the nation's largest conference of university and commercial nanoscientists, which last year hosted more than 3,000 professional nanoscientists and researchers from university and commercial research centers.

"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Nanotechnology Task Force earlier this month began their hearings into the impact of the use of nanotechnologies in a growing number of foods and consumer products. The hearings suggest we at NSTI could help bridge the 'knowledge gap' between nanotechnology's research and commercial professionals and U.S. government officials," NSTI Executive Director Dr. Matthew Laudon said today.

In announcing the NSTI "Health & Environmental Summit on Nano," Dr. Laudon also officially opened the 'Call for Papers' and a date for the Summit.

"A number of nanosciences are already helping researchers today improve drugs, foods, cosmetics, and other consumer products. A new wave of exciting nanotechnologies are coming that hold even more exciting possibilities for improving consumers' health and well-being. That said, industry enthusiasm should be balanced with appropriate due diligence," Dr. Laudon said. "We are pleased the FDA has accepted our offer to lend our community and resources to help the FDA in its fact-finding, which looks to achieve this important balance."

During Nanotech 2006, NSTI hosted many top experts on nanotechnology use in cosmetics, foods, drugs and personal care products, including senior experts from Harvard University, Yale University, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, City University of New York, University of Illinois-Champagne-Urbana, BASF, Proctor and Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive and Unilever Research.
