Three Microtune Tuners Enable High-Definition TV, On-Demand Services and PVR Capabilities in New Humax Cable Set-Top Box
Business Wire, Sept 13, 2006
PLANO, Texas -- Targeted for Japan, Advanced New Set-Top Box with Triple-Tuner Architecture Supports Japanese Digital Cable Standards
Microtune(R), Inc. (Nasdaq:TUNE), the Tuner Company, today announced that Humax Co., Ltd, one of the leading set-top box manufacturers in the world, has leveraged three of Microtune's tuner chips for its three-in-one cable set-top box targeted for Japan. In production today, the Humax JC-5000 box combines high-definition digital programming with on-demand services and personal video recorder (PVR) functionality to bring a range of advanced and interactive services to cable consumers.
Microtune is a worldwide supplier of radio frequency (RF) integrated circuit and subsystems solutions for consumer and automotive electronics, including those for cable data and telephony modems, set-top boxes, digital televisions and the new class of mobile TV devices.
"The JC-5000 set-top box is engineered to deliver exceptional TV quality with next-generation functionality," said Mike Yim, Senior Manager, Humax. "Our goal is to offer flexibility and reliability to our cable customers and to deliver outstanding performance to cable subscribers. Microtune's tuners enable us to design and produce set-top boxes using the best RF technology."
"Humax is one of the leaders in the international set-top box market, and we are pleased to provide the RF solution for its multi-tuner cable set-top box for the Japanese market," said Albert Taddiken, Microtune's Chief Operating Officer. "New-generation cable set-top boxes like this one from Humax draw on a consumer appetite for digital electronics, particularly high-definition and digital video recorder capabilities. By deploying three of Microtune's tuners in the JC-5000, Humax achieves a very small form-factor, very high performance RF front-end in its high-end set-tops, while gaining superior RF performance, compliance to Japan's unique industry standards, and low bill-of-materials cost."
The Humax JC-5000 deploys two of Microtune's MicroTuner(TM) MT2111 analog/digital tuners and one MT2050 digital tuner, as well as a MicroStreamer(TM) MT1550 upstream amplifier. The three tuners enable multiple streams of video and data inside the set-top box, supporting high-definition video, on-demand services, personal video recording and high-speed Internet access. The MT1550 upstream amplifier enables two-way communications.
Microtune pioneered the development of silicon triple-tuner architectures for "high-end" digital cable set-top boxes that include PVRs and/or high-definition capability. Its Reference Designs demonstrated the real-world RF feasibility, performance and functionality that was capable in multi-tuner set-tops, media servers or residential gateways. Today, Microtune's tuner chips are deployed by worldwide equipment manufacturers such as Humax, and they are featured in advanced digital products that enhance the consumer's cable home entertainment experience.
