NEC Laboratories America Researcher Recognized as a ``TR35'' Top Innovator by MIT's Technology Review Magazine; NEC's Anand Raghunathan Acknowledged for Innovation in Securing Mobile Appliances
Business Wire, Sept 13, 2006
PRINCETON, N.J. -- NEC Laboratories America, Inc., the U.S.-based arm of NEC's global network of research laboratories, today proudly announced the recognition of Anand Raghunathan, as one of the top 35 innovators under the age of 35, by MIT's Technology Review magazine. The select group of innovators - known as the TR35 - was identified by the magazine as having the potential to profoundly impact the world. Selected for his significant contributions to making mobile appliances more secure, Raghunathan will be honored at the upcoming Technology Review's Emerging Technologies Conference at MIT, and featured in the publication's September 2006 issue and on its website.
Anand Raghunathan and his team designed a security processor that lays a strong foundation for system security by providing an isolated environment in which a device's core security functions can be executed. By using this solution, the code that implements security functions, and its associated data, are protected from software attacks, such as viruses and worms.
As a further benefit, Raghunathan's processor enables secure transactions to be executed several times faster than current mobile appliances, while requiring less than one-third the power consumption; resulting in an improved user experience and longer battery life.
According to Jason Pontin, editor-in-chief of Technology Review: "The TR35 is an amazing group of people. Their accomplishments are likely to shape their fields for decades to come. It's evident when you scroll back and see names like Sergey Brin, Jonathan Ive, and Steve Jurvetson among the past winners."
"As mobile devices become ubiquitous and get used in a variety of critical applications, security is causing serious and growing concerns. Anand's security solution that makes mobile devices less vulnerable to security attacks is a landmark development towards addressing these concerns," said Roger Tran, president of NEC Laboratories America. "We are proud of Anand for his accomplishments and successes in developing this breakthrough technology, and congratulate him on being selected as part of the elite TR35 list."
The honorees are selected by the editors of the magazine in collaboration with a prestigious panel of judges from major institutions and corporations such as Boston University, Hewlett-Packard Labs, the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, Caltech, and Applied Materials.
Information about past and present TR35 winners and judges is available at www.technologyreview.com/TR35/
A number of the 35 winners will also be featured on Technology Review's new video blog, designed to highlight visually the personalities of the innovators. The vlog is located at www.technologyreview.com/blog/video.aspx
