Netopia Embedded Software for DSL Gateways Now Available With TR-111 Support; Enables Home Networking and Entertainment Devices Behind the Gateway to Be Managed With NBBS Software
Business Wire, Sept 21, 2006
EMERYVILLE, Calif. -- Netopia, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTPA), a market leader in broadband gateways and service delivery software, announced that the embedded software for its VDSL2, ADSL2/2 , and bonded ADSL2 broadband gateways is now available with optional support for DSL Forum technical specification TR-111. TR-111 extends the TR-069 industry specification for remote management of broadband gateways to such devices as VoIP phones, media set-top boxes, and gaming systems connected to the home network behind the gateway. This enables Automated Configuration Systems (ACS) and Element Management Systems (EMS) that support the TR-069 specification, such as the Netopia NBBS remote device management platform, to automatically and remotely configure, manage, and support devices on the home network that are connected through a Netopia gateway.

Netopia has been a leader in adopting industry standards to facilitate the deployment of IPTV and triple-play services. Netopia welcomes vendors who want to test their devices with Netopia's NBBS TR-069 remote device management software and vendors of other ACS/EMS systems who want to test their software against Netopia gateways. With the optional availability of TR-111 support in Netopia Broadband gateways, Netopia is now also welcoming connected home appliance vendors, such as set-top box manufacturers, to participate in expanded system testing. To date, NBBS has been installed by more than a dozen service providers and is managing in excess of one million broadband gateways provided by multiple vendors.
"The interoperability of our hardware and software with those of other vendors is essential to our business strategy," said Christopher Thomson, Netopia's vice president of marketing. "To that end, we invest a significant amount of engineering effort to developing and adhering to specifications like the DSL Forum's TR-069 and TR-101, and now TR-111. We believe the widespread adoption of industry specifications for remote management capabilities is crucial to the successful deployment of multi-vendor broadband networks in the home."
Netopia is an active member in a number of the industry's standard-setting organizations, including the DSL Forum, the Wi-Fi Alliance, and the Home Gateway Initiative. Last week Netopia participated in the DSL Forum's first VDSL2 System Integrator Plugfest at the University of New Hampshire's InterOperability Laboratory. This week, Netopia is participating at the annual meeting of the DSL Forum.
"We continue to be excited by the level of interest in the industry for technologies like VDSL2 as well as for our customer care and service deployment solutions, eCare and NBBS," said Ken Haase, Netopia's vice president of product management. "We know service providers need flexibility to pick the right products with the optimal price/performance ratio for their customers. We're proud to be one part of the story that enables our partners to deploy services like triple play and IPTV reliably."
The remote management and support of subscribers' home networks is being driven by subscribers' reluctance to accept the responsibility for systems integration and support in their home networks. Products like NBBS and eCare enable complete control and visibility of the home network-from the gateway to the desktop-for service providers' technical support personnel. Service providers, set-top box vendors, and network peripheral vendors who wish to explore the power of a truly managed network should contact Netopia.
