Bit9's Software Knowledgebase, FileAdvisor™, Quadruples to 1.2 Billion File Records, Comprising 15 Terabytes of Data
Business Wire, Sept 25, 2006
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Free file identification service identifies unknown software, giving users control over their desktops
Bit9, Inc., which enables Windows Desktop Administrators to identify and stop non-business applications, today announced that its FileAdvisor file identification service (http://fileadvisor.bit9.com) now covers more than 1.2 billion file records, including more than 120 million unique software files. Bit9 FileAdvisor, the world's largest file knowledgebase, is the definitive source for identifying software on any Windows(R) computer. The service, which launched in March of this year with 4 terabytes of data and more than 250 million file records, now has nearly quadrupled to more than 15 terabytes of data and 1.2 billion file records. In its first six months of service, Bit9 FileAdvisor has served visitors from 71 countries, who have launched more than 650,000 queries. The top referring countries after the United States include Germany, the UK, Canada, Switzerland, France, Netherlands, and Australia.

FileAdvisor offers accurate file identification, source information, and other useful data on the otherwise unknown files on computers. The result? Consumers, business users, and IT professionals can trace the source of the software on their computers, helping to identify applications that are wanted or unwanted. Armed with this information, users can easily understand the function, importance, and validity of the software they are trying to identify.
"As more and more software is downloaded by users, companies are having a difficult time identifying what is running on their systems, making it nearly impossible to enforce desktop policies," said Tom Murphy, Chief Marketing Officer, Bit9. "FileAdvisor is the most comprehensive source of software executables, drivers, and patches available today. This information, which is also integrated into our Parity(TM) application control software, gives customers actionable intelligence so they can see, know, and control what software should and should not run on their desktops and laptops."
Bit9 FileAdvisor is available via a downloadable utility (called a "killer feature" by Christopher Null at Yahoo! Tech) at http://fileadvisor.bit9.com and also from Bit9's site, www.bit9.com. Bit9 has compiled the FileAdvisor knowledgebase via an innovative, proprietary method of crawling the Web, through aggressive acquisition of physical media, as well as through partnerships with IBM (NYSE: IBM) and others. In addition, Bit9 FileAdvisor uses the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) National Software Reference Library (NSRL) Reference Data Set (RDS) -- also known as the NIST Special Database 28 -- as well as the Department of Justice's Hashkeeper database. Never before have these databases and other sources of file information been aggregated into such a massive repository and made available to the general public.
