US Patent Office Re-Affirms VISICU's eICU® Patent with Re-Examination
Business Wire, Sept 27, 2006
Life Saving Technology Recognized for Innovation
BALTIMORE -- VISICU, Inc. (NASDAQ:EICU) has been granted a reexamination certificate for patent No. 6,804,656 from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for its "SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PROVIDING CONTINUOUS, EXPERT NETWORK CRITICAL CARE SERVICES FROM A REMOTE LOCATION(S)" - eICU([R]) Program.
A reexamination of the claims of the patent was requested in January 2005 by a third party desiring to implement their own solution and citing references that required further consideration by the Patent Office. During the re-examination process, minor amendments to the claims were made that were consistent with the eICU Program that is in place at over 30 health systems, representing approximately 5,000 beds. The eICU Program features a centrally located, remote monitoring system equipped with high fidelity telemedicine and proprietary early warning and intervention software. VISICU is the first company to receive such U.S. patent protection and the first to bring remote critical care (eICU centers) to the marketplace.
The eICU Program, offered only through VISICU, enables hospitals to meet stringent patient care safety standards and assures fundamental changes in hospital critical care. The eICU Program connects the patient to the doctor 24/7 and allows hospitals to leverage their intensivist resources to care for large numbers of critically-ill patients simultaneously. This new care delivery model enables optimal use of scarce healthcare resources while simultaneously improving patient outcomes and financial results for health systems.
"VISICU is pleased that the Patent Office, through the issuance of the reexamination certificate, continues to recognize the innovation of the eICU Program - a Program that continues to be central to saving lives and managing important critical care resources in health systems throughout the United States," said Frank Sample, CEO of VISICU. "This action by the US Patent Office will re-assure customers and prospects that this remote clinical solution is protected by this patent."
