Toshiba Joins IDEMA in Celebrating 50 Years of Hard Disk Drive Innovation at DISKCON USA 2006; Company Leaders to Showcase Small Form Factor HDD Technology Advances, Underscoring Impact on the Digital World

IRVINE, Calif. -- As the industry celebrates the 50th anniversary of the hard disk drive (HDD) at DISKCON USA 2006 on Sept. 13-14, Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD), the industry leader in mobile hard disk drive (HDD) technology, will showcase its vision for the HDD industry's next 50 years and the technology's impact on the proliferation of digital information and entertainment devices.
Toshiba leaders will present in three sessions at DISKCON USA, the premier HDD industry event held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, Calif. Scott Maccabe, vice president and general manager, will join other top executives for a retrospective and future look at the HDD industry in the "Company Views of Our Early Years and Strategic Directions for the Future" session at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 13.
"Toshiba has been at the forefront of ground-breaking developments in the HDD industry over the last half century, and we plan to continue pushing the envelope with new advancements that enable the digitization of business and personal information technology," Maccabe said. In addition to Maccabe's presentation, Toshiba's Yoichiro Tanaka, senior manager of the HDD product planning department, will discuss future technology directions for mobile HDDs in the "HDD Technology and Its Future" session scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sept. 13. Scott Wright, product marketing manager, will highlight Toshiba's progress in migrating HDD technology to the car in "HDD Applications, Integration and Evolution: Users Speak Out" session at 3 p.m. on Sept. 14.
Toshiba has a long history of technology leadership in the HDD industry. The company was the first HDD manufacturer to commercialize perpendicular magnetic recording, a technology in development by the HDD industry for more than 20 years, and has deployed that technology on its second-generation product family to achieve world-leading areal density at 178.8 gigabits per square inch and the industry's first 100GB(1)-per-platter mobile HDD. In addition, Toshiba introduced the world's smallest HDD, according to the Guinness World Records book, at 0.85-inches and is the current market leader in mobile HDD shipments, according to research firm IDC.
