ICSA Labs Creates Anti-Spam Product Developers' Consortium

Business Wire, April 11, 2007

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. -- ICSA Labs([R]), an independent division of Cybertrust([R]), the global information security specialist, today announced the formation of the Anti-Spam Product Developers' Consortium. This consortium was created to advance anti-spam technologies and to provide a third-party information source to help the anti-spam user community select and effectively implement anti-spam products.

"Spam continues to challenge the enterprise as a persistent problem and now makes up the majority of corporate email," said George Japak, vice president of ICSA Labs. "The goal for the Anti-Spam Product Developers' Consortium is to work with product and solution providers to develop standards and definitions that allow for objective product analysis. Through the consortium, ICSA Labs will provide users with a credible and objective source for anti-spam information."

ICSA Labs recently conducted a stakeholders' meeting for anti-spam developers to discuss the significant need in the marketplace for cooperation among anti-spam vendors. The vendors present unanimously agreed on the need for a consortium, whose goals would be to educate end users about anti-spam products and create publicly vetted, objective, and credible security criteria against which anti-spam products can be tested and certified.

The charter members of the ICSA Labs Anti-Spam Product Developers' Consortium are: Astaro Corporation, COMDOM Software, Fortinet, IBM, Kaspersky Lab, Proofpoint, Inc., SECNAP Network Security Corporation, Sendio, Inc., SonicWALL, Inc. and Symantec Corp.

"The increasing sophistication and aggressiveness of spam attacks has kept anti-spam solutions at the forefront of today's enterprise IT security concerns," said Andres Kohn, vice president of product management for Proofpoint, Inc. "This consortium of reputable, third-party experts will help define the metrics and criteria that enterprises should expect from anti-spam solutions as well as ease-of-administration, scalability and reliability recommendations."

"During the past six months, spam has not just increased in scale but also evolved with sophisticated techniques used to evade basic anti-spam technologies," said Nick Mehta, vice president of product management, Symantec Information Foundation. "Symantec is pleased to work with this consortium to help educate customers and develop standardized criteria that ensures they are protected against the risk of e-mail threats to the network."

The Anti-Spam Product Developers' Consortium charter meeting is currently scheduled for May in conjunction with Interop Las Vegas 2007. Among other business, the group will discuss the draft criteria that ICSA Labs proposes to use for anti-spam product certification testing. Following the acceptance of the draft criteria by the consortium members, ICSA Labs will accept products for anti-spam certification testing.

"Spam, phishing and other email attacks have burdened IT, frustrated users and created organizational security risks," said Gleb Budman, senior director of product management, SonicWALL, Inc. "As a long-standing partner of ICSA Labs, SonicWALL is pleased to serve on this consortium to help determine how best to offer protection from these email threats."
