Business Wire, April 11, 2007
BOSTON -- Two ProMutual Group executives will be guest speakers at the 2007 Annual Crittenden Medical Insurance Conference on Thursday, April 19, 2007. The conference will be held at the Omni Parker House in Boston, Massachusetts, and will feature several sessions on issues surrounding medical liability insurance. Both Richard W. Brewer, president and CEO, and Al Afonso, vice president of claims, will be speaking in separate sessions.
Mr. Brewer will join a panel of other CEOs from regional medical liability insurance companies to discuss forecasted trends and changes in the medical liability insurance industry in the Yogi Berra inspired session, "If You Don't Know Where You Are Going, You Will Wind Up Somewhere Else." Issues to be discussed will include the future competitive environment, mergers and acquisitions, universal healthcare, risk retention groups, tort reform, enterprise risk and more.
With over 30 years of experience in the insurance business, Mr. Brewer is a proven business leader with a track record of accomplishments. He has demonstrated the ability to direct large, complex insurance organizations and has earned a reputation within the industry for integrity and leadership. Before joining ProMutual Group, Mr. Brewer was CEO of Arbella Mutual Insurance Company and held executive positions with Hartford Insurance Group and National Grange Insurance Company. As President and CEO of ProMutual Group since 2001, Mr. Brewer is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the organization. He reports to a board of directors composed mainly of practicing or retired healthcare providers.
Shortly before Mr. Brewer's segment, Mr. Afonso will participate in the discussion titled, "Failure to Diagnose Cancer: Litigator, Claim Professional, and Physician Perspectives." This unique session will offer the perspectives of claims, legal and medical representatives on delayed and missed cancer diagnoses. The talk will focus on how these cases are trending as well as suggestions for the avoidance, defense and resolution of these claims.
Mr. Afonso has served as vice president of claims at ProMutual Group since 2002 and is responsible for areas related to defending policyholders. Additionally, he develops strategies to enhance claims management and support corporate goals while defining and communicating corporate claim philosophy and practices. Mr. Afonso held numerous management positions at St. Paul Insurance Company and served as vice president of claims for Healthcare Underwriters Mutual Insurance Company before assuming his current position at ProMutual Group. In his spare time, he also assists the Physician's Insurance Association of America's Risk Management Education Planning Committee in organizing claims and risk management educational functions.
