IIJ Introduces IIJ SSL Certificate Management Service

Business Wire, April 23, 2007

TOKYO -- Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJI, TSE1: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced the April 23 release of the IIJ SSL Certificate Management Service, a proxy registration service that performs all actions necessary to acquire and use SSL certificates.

An SSL certificate is a digital certificate issued by an independent certificate-issuing authority. The SSL certificate is installed on a server and authenticates the website, verifies the identity of the website owner, and can encrypt the communication between the user's browser and the server. In recent years, the need for effective measures to counter increasingly common phishing frauds has grown, and this service reduces the work associated with acquiring an SSL certificate, thus enabling IIJ customers to more easily operate and maintain a secure website.

Service Features

* SSL Certificate Procurement

IIJ will interact with the issuing authority and perform all functions necessary to acquire an SSL certificate, including generating the Certificate Signing Request (CSR)1 and performing other application requirements. For customers also using an IIJ service2 with SSL-capabilities, IIJ will also install the certificate on the server. This comprehensive support--from acquisition to installation--greatly reduces the burden associated with acquiring an SSL certificate.

* Renewal Notification Service

IIJ can track the expiration date for each certificate and guide the customer through the renewal process as the expiration date approaches. This ensures that the all-important renewal period is not inadvertently missed, which should help contribute to secure website operation and maintenance.

* Status Monitoring

After registering for this service, the customer will be able to monitor the status of their certificate application through a special Web interface. Notices such as, "Waiting on customer documentation," "Waiting for applicant acknowledgement," "Certificate has been issued," and others allow the customer know the status of their application and assist in the administration of the application process.

IIJ is dedicated to delivering ever more convenience and customer value.

1 Certificate Signing Request (CSR)

A request for a certificate signature, which is necessary for issuing an SSL certificate. This includes information about the organization operating the website, such as the organization's name, their public key, and other information used in data encryption.
