MetTel and Actelis Deliver Ethernet-IP Services to Manhattan
Business Wire, August 29, 2007
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Actelis Networks[R], the leading global supplier of Carrier Ethernet over Copper[TM] solutions, today announced at OSP Expo that MetTel[R] (Metropolitan Telecommunications) has selected Actelis to enhance its existing Metro Ethernet network for delivery of fast, reliable Ethernet-IP services to SMBs (small and medium-size businesses) throughout Manhattan, in New York City. Actelis will supply MetTel with its Carrier Ethernet over Copper solutions and award-winning EFMplus[TM] technology to increase MetTel's network capacity in the area. This will enable the New York City-based CLEC (competitive local exchange carrier) to provide advanced, high-speed voice, video and data services over its existing copper network to enterprise and commercial customers.
"Actelis' carrier Ethernet solutions leverage our existing Metro network, allowing MetTel to deliver a more robust portfolio of high-speed services with fiber-optic reliability and enhanced performance to our valued New York customers," said Edward J. Fox III, vice president of network services at MetTel. "By deploying Actelis' carrier Ethernet solutions, we not only exceed the growing bandwidth requirements placed on our network, but also deliver a reliable, future-proof network that is cost effective for both MetTel and our customers."
For most commercial businesses today, the access network in the first mile remains a congested bottleneck, and connecting to the network via fiber-optic lines remains a costly proposition for both business customers and carriers due to the lack of facilities and lengthy turn-up times. Consequently, end-to-end Ethernet services over a WAN (wide area network) have been made available only to a limited number of business customers located within reach of fiber-based Metro Ethernet networks. MetTel's business subscribers, requiring these advanced services, faced these same issues.
"For our business customers to run their advanced telephony systems, they required more bandwidth than their existing T1 connections provided," explained Fox. "Because they were connected to the network through existing copper facilities, the upfront costs and lengthy delays in deploying new fiber became difficult to justify for all parties. With the Actelis solution, we were able to immediately turn up symmetrical Ethernet services to those customers over the existing copper infrastructure, providing the same bandwidth and high-speed that a fiber-optic T3 connection would deliver."
"We believe our carrier Ethernet solutions are an ideal complement with MetTel's plans to grow its Metro Ethernet network capacity and efficiency while reducing its capital and operational expenses," said Mehmet Balos, president of worldwide marketing, sales and services for Silicon Valley-based Actelis. "Like MetTel, Actelis has a strong foothold and reputation in the Northeast for delivering superior products and services, so we are very pleased to support MetTel's ongoing mission of being one of the leading CLECs in the country."
