Pilot Program Will Simulate Government Transition from IPv4 to IPv6
MONTREAL -- Hexago, the leading provider of IPv6 deployment solutions, today announced the company has teamed with Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) in a pilot program to help transition a part of Lockheed Martin's global network to Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6). The pilot program will work through all phases of a full-scale IPv6 transition, similar to one that a government agency would undertake. Hexago contributed the company's flagship product, Gateway6TM, to the pilot program. Gateway6 provides secure and managed tunneling and translation as a complement to dual-stack when migrating to IPv6.

Hexago has demonstrated a commitment to advancing IPv6 deployment through years of IPv6 network consulting, IPv6 product development, participation in IPv6 standards committees and research networks, by supporting IPv6 conferences and events, by sponsoring go6.net - the portal to the IPv6 world, and with the newly released IPv6 guide for U.S. government agencies.
The U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) mandated in 2005 that all federal agencies enable their core networks for IPv6 by June 2008. The U.S. Department of Defense's (DoD) goal is to complete the transition to IPv6 for all inter and intra networking across the DoD by FY 2008. For the military, IPv6 will enable global, net-centric operations that translate an information advantage into a decisive edge for the warfighter. The Government Affairs Office estimates that the transition will cost the federal government approximately $25 billion over the next 25 years.
Working with leading commercial IT vendors, Lockheed Martin's IPv6 Center of Excellence will lead the transition project, upgrading a network that spans laboratories in 10 different cities, from California to the United Kingdom.
The transition to IPv6 is becoming a hot topic in the computer networking community as, in addition to the U.S. government's initiatives, IPv4 addresses are estimated to run out by 2010. The available IPv4 resource pool is reduced to the point that the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) advised the Internet community in June 2007 that migration to IPv6 is necessary. IPv6 provides an exponential increase in the number of addresses available to networked devices.
