As recently as the third quarter of 2004, there were six major U.S. wireless carriers in this space: AT&T Wireless, Cingular Wireless, Nextel Communications, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless. Cingular has acquired AT&T, and Sprint has acquired Nextel, and both Cingular and Sprint, are in the process of consolidating their networks, resources, and systems to gain maximum benefits and reduce operational expenditure (OPEX), according to the analyst of this study. An obvious by-product of consolidation is increased competition with major participants competing in a market that provides service to almost 60 percent of the U.S. population.

The youth market is expected to lead in the adoption of mobile data services that can drive average revenue per user (ARPU) for wireless carriers. The initial growth is expected to be primarily driven by early adopters that are not price sensitive such as youth between the ages of 13 and 25. Moreover, growth in mobile products such as ringtones, games, and graphics is expected to displace spending on many traditional youth products such as music, clothing, and movies.

Advancements in Networks to Drive Growth of the Wireless Market and Fuel Development of Carriers

While comparing the major participants in this market, it is evident that Cingular and Sprint have been doing a good job consolidating their networks, removing a gap that could be used by its competitors.
