ADAPTIX Announces Issuance of U.S. Patent Covering Adaptive Subcarrier Clusters in an OFDMA System

Business Wire, Jan 22, 2007

Patented Technology Further Enhances OFDMA Pioneer's Strength in Mobile WiMAX System Development and IP Portfolio

DALLAS -- The U.S. Patent and Trademarks Office (USPTO) has issued U.S. Patent No. 7,146,172, entitled "Multi-Carrier Communications with Adaptive Cluster Configuration and Switching," to ADAPTIX, a pioneer in the development of OFDMA and Mobile WiMAX technologies. This new patent further underscores the company's strength in OFDMA and related technology intellectual property (IP) rights.

Following the initial filing in 2001, U.S. Patent No. 7,146,172 was issued on Dec. 5, 2006 and describes a method and apparatus for allocating subcarriers in an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system. OFDMA technology is a very efficient transmission method used as the basis for multiple types of networks, including the increasingly popular Mobile WiMAX networks. The claims in the patent cover a method for simultaneously allocating subcarriers in both coherence (adjacent) and diversity (distributed) groups, or "clusters." This is especially relevant to functional Mobile WiMAX systems that must support both adjacent and pseudorandom subcarrier assignments based on current subscriber conditions such as fixed versus mobile usage.

"ADAPTIX's intellectual property rights portfolio continues to grow in size and strength as many of our pending patents have issued with more to come," said ADAPTIX President and CEO Michael Pisterzi. "This patent, in concert with other important coverage in our IP portfolio and continued development efforts, further enhances ADAPTIX's position as 'The OFDMA Company.' Our award-winning BX-3000 system is the embodiment of our patented technology as the industry's most practical and deployable OFDMA-based Mobile WiMAX system platform."

ADAPTIX recently won the Best of WiMAX World Award for System Design for its compact and flexible BX-3000 series of mobile base stations. The BX-3000 series incorporates technology covered by the company's IP portfolio. It features ADAPTIX's powerful third-generation OFDMA engine that supports standards-based IEEE 802.16e-2005 functionality and interoperability. All ADAPTIX base stations and terminals are built on a highly programmable software-defined radio (SDR) architecture for maximum performance, flexibility and serviceability.

Copies of the ADAPTIX U.S. Patent No. 7,146,172 may be obtained via the USPTO website (www.uspto.gov). ADAPTIX also works with numerous international patent agencies for intellectual property protection of this invention and others, both issued and pending, on a global scale.
