Patented Technology Further Enhances OFDMA Pioneer's Strength in Mobile WiMAX System Development and IP Portfolio

DALLAS -- The U.S. Patent and Trademarks Office (USPTO) has issued U.S. Patent No. 7,146,172, entitled "Multi-Carrier Communications with Adaptive Cluster Configuration and Switching," to ADAPTIX, a pioneer in the development of OFDMA and Mobile WiMAX technologies. This new patent further underscores the company's strength in OFDMA and related technology intellectual property (IP) rights.

Following the initial filing in 2001, U.S. Patent No. 7,146,172 was issued on Dec. 5, 2006 and describes a method and apparatus for allocating subcarriers in an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system. OFDMA technology is a very efficient transmission method used as the basis for multiple types of networks, including the increasingly popular Mobile WiMAX networks. The claims in the patent cover a method for simultaneously allocating subcarriers in both coherence (adjacent) and diversity (distributed) groups, or "clusters." This is especially relevant to functional Mobile WiMAX systems that must support both adjacent and pseudorandom subcarrier assignments based on current subscriber conditions such as fixed versus mobile usage.
