SecureWave's Dennis Szerszen and Lexar Media's John Geldman to Outline Best Practices for Protecting Against Data Leakage, Introduction of Malware and other Threats Posed by the Increased Use of Removable Storage Media
HERNDON, Va. -- SecureWave, a worldwide leader in endpoint security, today announced that Dennis Szerszen, senior vice president, will speak about the evolution of removable media and how to take advantage of this technology while minimizing the security risks during the 16th Annual RSA Conference, February 5-9, 2007 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Szerszen, along with John Geldman, senior level technologist, emerging product team, at Lexar Media, Inc., will lead a discussion entitled "Portable Threats: Securing the Corporate Endpoint Against Removable Media."
"From Apple accidentally shipping iPods infected with a virus to McDonald's recalling promotional MP3 players that were loaded with a Trojan, the security threats posed by the wide-spread use of removable storage media in the enterprise made headlines in 2006," said Szerszen. "This creates a dilemma for IT administrators because many devices serve a valuable business purpose. However, the security risks--including both introduction of malware and data leakage--cannot be ignored. Our presentation will address these challenges and outline the steps organizations can take to neutralize the threat, including establishing a clear written policy and implementing a multi-layered solution to enforce it."
As part of this session, Szerszen and Geldman will explain the security risks posed by the use of removable storage media and present studies that demonstrate loss or theft of devices as the most common cause of security incidents when information is removed from the enterprise. They will also evaluate corporate policies that define appropriate device use within the organization and provide examples of failed attempts to enforce these polices--including stripping all USB ports from corporate PCs or putting epoxy over open ports. Finally, Szerszen and Geldman will discuss best practices for implementing a multi-layered solution to proactively enforce written policies regarding device use.
