COSTA MESA, Calif. -- NDS (NASDAQ: NNDS), the leading provider of technology solutions for digital pay-TV, today announced an agreement with QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies and data solutions, to begin integration of the NDS Simulcrypt Synchronizer (SCS) into QUALCOMM's MediaFLO multiplexer software reference platform. The planned implementation of SCS will allow more than one conditional access (CA) system to run simultaneously within the MediaFLO System. This provides QUALCOMM with the option to use open CA solutions from multiple technology providers. Upon the integration of SCS, NDS VideoGuard will be tested with the MediaFLO System.
MediaFLO is a global mobile entertainment platform, enabling broadcasting of high-quality video, audio, Clipcasting([TM],)media and IP datacasting streams to mobile handsets. The MediaFLO system, comprising the MediaFLO Media Distribution System and FLO([TM]) technology, is a comprehensive, end-to-end solution designed specifically to address the inherent challenges of distributing large volumes of high-quality mobile multimedia content to wireless subscribers.
Through this agreement, NDS SCS software will be integrated into QUALCOMM's MediaFLO multiplexer software reference platform.
NDS is the first CA solution provider with the capability to offer wireless vendors an SCS software option. In typical Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) environments, this software is provided to the wireless carriers via the multiplexer as a part of their complete offering. In this case, NDS is customizing the SCS software to meet the specifications of the FLO Forum, the group of wireless industry stakeholders whose goal is to establish MediaFLO as an internationally-supported technology standard. Through the adoption of this SCS solution, any FLO Forum-compliant conditional access vendor can potentially integrate its technology with the MediaFLO system.
"This agreement with NDS will allow QUALCOMM to further support the market with its industry-leading mobile broadcasting platform which provides business advantages to all members of the ecosystem," said Souheil Gallouzi, Senior Director of Partner Relations for QUALCOMM MediaFLO Technologies. "We are working with NDS to begin the integration of its SCS, which will offer our customers the ability to choose among the broadest selection of CA technologies, with NDS VideoGuard being one of the first tested on this platform."
NDS is a market-leader in CA and digital rights management, as well as an active participant in the FLO Forum. NDS VideoGuard is the most widely deployed CA solution in the world, currently securing content on more than 72 million set-top boxes globally. NDS has taken this proven technology and integrated it across a wide variety of new platforms, including mobile devices, personal media players (PMPs) and PCs.
"NDS is the world's foremost expert in protecting TV content, securing more than $32 billion in content revenues annually," said Dov Rubin, Vice President and General Manager, NDS Americas. "With this agreement, QUALCOMM will be able to support the best open conditional access solutions in the Mobile TV market today, which means that the volume and variety of content to be delivered to mobile devices can continue to improve, since it will be securely protected."
