Brookline and Galaxy Internet Services to Launch Strix Systems' Wireless Mesh Network for Public Safety and Municipal Communications at "Wire Cutting" Ceremony

Business Wire, July 16, 2007

Multi-use First Responder Wi-Fi Network Will Use Licensed Frequencies for Police and Fire Departments and Standard Wi-Fi for Consumers

WHAT:

Strix Systems, the leader in high-performance wireless mesh networking and the equipment provider for Brookline, Mass., and Galaxy Internet Services, is participating in the launch of the city's multi-use first-responder Wi-Fi network at a wire cutting event in Brookline on Wednesday, July 18, 2007.

The network is one of the first combined public safety and commercial networks in the U.S. to incorporate the high-power 4.9 GHz frequency band for public safety services. Brookline and Galaxy will provide the combined services to a population of over 57,000.

Strix's Access/One Outdoor Wireless System (OWS) enables Brookline to use the newly licensed 4.9 GHz spectrum on a town-wide basis, dedicated to emergency services. Strix provides a high-power version of 4.9 GHz which enables more than double the range and coverage of standard 4.9 GHz solutions. First responders such as police and fire departments will be able to exchange information with local, state, and federal agencies securely via the network. With broadband wireless internet access, first responders will be able to use new applications to distribute information to personnel both in the field and in command centers. The network will also support traditional internet services and VoIP for municipal and commercial/consumer applications.

A free trial period allows all town residents and visitors to access the wireless network to explore its robust Internet access and border-to-border mobility by selecting the city's 'BrooklineWireless' Wi-Fi SSID.

WHO:

The wire-cutting ceremony will feature speakers from the various agencies involved in deploying the network and dignitaries from local and state governments:

* Sharon E. Gillett, Commissioner, Department of Telecommunications and Cable, Commonwealth of Masssachusetts

* Daniel C. O'Leary, Police Chief, Town of Brookline

* Michael Merrill, Selectman, Town of Brookline

* Jesse Mermell, Selectman, Town of Brookline

* Kevin Stokes, Chief Information Officer, Town of Brookline

* Bob Carp, President, Galaxy Internet Services

* Bruce Brown, CEO, Strix Systems

WHEN & WHERE:

The event will be held in front of the Devotion House at 345 Harvard Street in Brookline, Mass., on Wednesday, July 18, at 6:00 p.m.
