SmartEdge 1200 Honored for Outstanding Innovation

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Redback Networks, an Ericsson company that makes video-centric routers for 75 percent of the world's largest triple-play networks, today announced that the SmartEdge[R] 1200 multi-service edge router has won the 2007 TMC Labs Innovation Award, presented by INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine.

The SmartEdge 1200 is the first million subscriber rack for triple-play services such as HDTV, HD VoD and broadband mobility. Since its launch on June 4, SmartEdge 1200 has been honored with five industry awards including TMC Labs Innovation award. The SmartEdge 1200 platform introduces three major innovations. It will double carrier capacity for new video upgrades, extend triple-play services to broadband mobile networks and integrate up to six network applications into a single router. The new network applications include deep-packet inspection for peer-to-peer traffic management, advanced session border control capabilities and network security for carriers and their customers.

"TMC's selection of the SmartEdge 1200 validates the demand we are seeing for integrating video and mobility into broadband networks," said George Antoun, senior vice president, marketing, product management and sales at Redback Networks. "In five years, we believe more than 2 billion wireless and wireline users will be upgraded to video-centric broadband networks from 250 million broadband users today. The strategic decisions to build next generation broadband infrastructures are being made today, and carriers are specifically looking for the functionality and power we've integrated into the SmartEdge 1200 platform."

"Redback is clearly deserving of recognition in the IP Communications industry. We're proud to reward their hard work with a TMC Labs Innovation Award this year," said TMC President Rich Tehrani.

According to Tom Keating, CTO and TMC Labs Editorial Director at TMC, "The Innovation Awards exemplify the best and the most unique products and services that this industry has to offer. Redback has demonstrated a commitment to quality, and a commitment to the further development of the IP communications industry through its SmartEdge 1200. Redback deserves this recognition, and I look forward to seeing other innovative solutions from them as they continue to contribute to the future of IP communications."

The TMC Labs Innovation Awards honor products that demonstrate raw innovation, unique features, and significant contributions toward improving communications technology. 2007 TMC Labs Innovation Award winners can be found in the July and August 2007 issues of INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine.

Redback has invested more than $400 million in its SmartEdge routing platform. The SmartEdge system completely eliminates the need for single-service, single-network routers. What is driving multi-service routing today is analogous to similar period when multiple application PCs eliminated the need for single application mainframes more than 25 years ago.

Fifteen of the top 20 telephone carriers worldwide already use the SmartEdge router platform to deliver broadband, phone and video services to more than 63M million subscribers. These carriers include AT&T, British Telecom, China Telecom, China Netcom, Chunghwa Telecom (Taiwan), eAccess (Japan), France Telecom, Korea Telecom and Turk Telecom, among more than 200 carriers worldwide.
