University of West Georgia Expands Network Capacity with OFS Optical Fiber Cable Donation
Business Wire, July 2, 2007
CARROLLTON, Ga. -- OFS, a company that designs, manufactures and supplies leading edge fiber-optic products, with operations in Carrollton, recently donated over $217,000 in fiber-optic cable to help improve communications systems at the University of West Georgia.
According to Vedat Gunay, Information Technology Services (ITS) associate director, UWG will benefit from the gift in several ways. Signals can be transmitted greater distances over fiber-optic cabling without the need for boosting. The cabling is also not affected by electromagnetic noise and has a long lifespan for lower maintenance cost.

"UWG has projected that its need for network capacity will grow exponentially in the coming years," said Gunay. "The new cable from OFS will enable the connection of new building projects such as the Health and Wellness Building and an expansion of the north campus, providing high-speed data networking for voice, data and video."
The gift will also aid the university in its goal of completing a fiber-optic ring around the campus, which is vital to ensuring continuing network reliability.
"OFS, a Furukawa company, is proud to donate fiber-optic cable that will enable the University of West Georgia to educate their students using one of the state's most advanced metropolitan fiber-optic networks," said Jacques Fiorella, OFS Cable and Connectivity Manufacturing General Manager. "We are pleased to contribute to the education and growth of our community here in Carrollton."
