Speeds Web-Based Application Performance; Increases Bandwidth Capacity

SAN FRANCISCO -- Riverbed Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:RVBD), the performance leader in wide-area data services (WDS), announced today that the Department of Conservation (DOC) in New Zealand has implemented its Steelhead[R] wide-area data services (WDS) appliances, at 60 sites throughout New Zealand, including three offices that are connected by satellite, to speed the performance of centralized applications and remote backup of data.

DOC is responsible for protecting the natural and historic heritage of New Zealand, as well as providing recreational opportunities for locals and tourists. With around 3,000 employees, the Department is divided into 13 conservancies across the north and south islands, each of which has between one and four area offices depending on the size of the conservancy.

Ken Walker, manager, technology and outsourced services, DOC, says the geographical distribution of New Zealand, and the remote locations of the majority of the organisation's offices, meant the sites outside of the main city centres were severely constrained by bandwidth limitations.

"The challenge in New Zealand is that you can really only access high speed Internet from the bigger cities," he explains. "Of our 60 sites, only seven are located in city centres and some are as remote as Aoraki/Mount Cook. This meant our remote offices were typically operating on bandwidth levels of 2MB, whereas in the city you can get 10MB or 100MB Ethernet connections."

When the organization began rolling out a new document management system to centralise management and backup processes, DOC took the opportunity to address the bandwidth constraints being experienced at its remote sites by deploying Riverbed's Steelhead appliances.

DOC chose Riverbed[R] based on Gartner's positioning of Riverbed in the 'WAN Optimisation Controller Magic Quadrant.' View Gartner's Magic Quadrant: www.riverbed.com/gartner. Since deployment began in late 2005, there have been no complaints about the previously slow network and while no official measurements have been taken, Mr Walker says Riverbed has sped up response time for a number of DOC's web-based applications by 500 percent.

"Users are generally happy unless they say otherwise and most of them are blissfully unaware the Steelhead devices are even there," says Mr Walker. "Even when we do complicated things on the network, the Riverbed technology just lets it happen. It's smart enough not to create problems for us, It's speeding up response times and the maths certainly stands up as far as value for money goes."

Steve Dixon, regional director, Australia/New Zealand, Riverbed, says DOC is typical of the distributed organisations occupying New Zealand.

"Regardless of their location, remote sites still need to collaborate in real-time," says Mr Dixon. "By using WDS technology, organizations can ensure applications running in remote offices are performing in line with those in the head office. It's not just about making applications run fast, but about taking advantage of that speed to significantly reduce costs for an organisation."

Riverbed's WDS solutions enable organizations with more than one office to overcome a host of severe problems, including poor application performance and insufficient bandwidth at remote sites. By speeding the performance of applications between distributed sites by five to 50 times and in some cases up to 100 times between enterprise datacenters and remote offices, Riverbed's award-winning Steelhead WDS appliances enable companies to consolidate IT, improve backup and replication processes to ensure data integrity, and improve staff productivity and collaboration. Steelhead appliances have been deployed in organizations ranging from the world's largest corporations with offices around the globe to small companies with a couple of sites that are just miles apart.
