Alternative Technology Optimizes WAN Application Delivery With Packeteer® PacketShapers®
Business Wire, July 31, 2007
Specialty distributor prioritizes centralized Citrix traffic and controls recreational traffic with PacketShaper appliances
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Alternative Technology, a leading specialty distributor of thin-client/server-based computing, edge infrastructure, virtualization, and government-approved security solutions, today announced the company is deploying Packeteer's PacketShaper[R] appliances across its organization to ensure the optimal performance and reliable delivery of its centralized Citrix application traffic. The PacketShaper appliances enable Alternative Technology to prioritize its business-critical Citrix traffic over all other applications with its existing WAN links, in order to maintain the highest levels of workforce productivity and to suppress recreational traffic from draining off precious network bandwidth.
"We rely on centralized Citrix applications as one of the primary drivers of our business operations. As a result, we have to maintain the highest levels of application performance and reliability," said James Paull, IT manager with Alternative Technology, Inc. "I've been a PacketShaper user for years, so I know first hand how these appliances can ensure bandwidth priority and quality-of-service for specific applications, such as Citrix."
Alternative Technology is deploying PacketShapers in its data center and all remote locations. Alt Tech's consolidated server and centralized application model is connected via a frame relay network, utilizing T1 links. This enables the company to equip its remote locations with inexpensive thin clients that are easier and less costly to manage than desktop computers.
Alternative Technology also relies on PacketShapers to provide new views into its network traffic. "The visibility we have into our traffic flows allow us to implement and enforce policy-based network application and Quality of Service (QOS) controls by classifying and prioritizing specific applications that are most critical to our business operations," said Paull. "At the same time, we throttle back recreational traffic like movie, music and game downloads, and other bandwidth-aggressive applications in order to limit their impact on network performance."
