Monotype Imaging Announces Access and Delivery of Scalable Fonts and Text Rendering Technologies to QUALCOMM's BREW Developers
Business Wire, June 20, 2007
iType Font Engine, WorldType Layout Engine and ESQ Mobile Fonts to be Available as BREW Extensions
SAN DIEGO -- Monotype Imaging Inc., a leading global provider of text imaging solutions, today announced it will be making its text rendering technologies available to BREW([R]) operators, handset manufacturers, publishers, developers and content creators. In addition, Monotype Imaging will for the first time introduce fonts available as BREW extensions, extending choice for stylistic, scalable type to enrich mobile offerings such as games, applications, services, user interfaces, advertising and multimedia content. Also announced is the ability to deploy Monotype Imaging's fonts to consumers over-the-air through BREW operators. The company will showcase its products in booth #23 at the BREW 2007 Conference, June 20 - 22 in San Diego.
"We believe a key path to improving the BREW user experience is to make our solution broadly accessible using the proven BREW infrastructure, channels and business model," said John Seguin, executive vice president of Monotype Imaging. "Through technologies and scalable fonts engineered for high-quality display on mobile phones, opportunities to add value and enrich the user experience are poised to expand. Whether the objective is to enhance the user experience, offer products that personalize and improve readability, or provide content in multiple languages, the entire BREW value chain will be able to leverage scalable technologies and fonts to help reach these goals."
Monotype Imaging's iType([R]) font engine, a scalable font rendering subsystem based on industry-standard TrueType([R]) and OpenType([R]) font formats, and the company's WorldType([R]) Layout Engine, a solution for enabling the composition, positioning and rendering of multilingual text, will be available through QUALCOMM's BREW Font Extensions, which provide Monotype Imaging's font solution and sample typefaces for displaying scalable TrueType and BREW bitmap fonts. Furthermore, a variety of Monotype Imaging's ESQ([R]) (Enhanced Screen Quality) Mobile fonts, engineered for high-quality display on mobile phones, will be available as BREW extensions.
At the BREW 2006 Conference, Monotype Imaging announced that its iType font engine and WorldType Layout Engine will be made available to handset manufacturers as an extension to the BREW client porting kit and the BREW SDK([R]). In addition, the BREW TrueType Font Extension has been incorporated into QUALCOMM's uiOne[TM] solution as a standard component since uiOne version 1.2, released in July 2006.
"Scalable fonts and multilingual text capabilities are a critical component of today's increasingly sophisticated design palette for games, applications, services and multimedia content," said Christophe Bernard, staff manager, developer relations for QUALCOMM Internet Services. "BREW operators, handset manufacturers and developers will be able to more easily differentiate products or increase usability, such as including multilingual capability to reach global markets. Monotype Imaging's technologies and fonts encourage the adoption of rich and engaging products and services for the BREW value chain."
The iType font engine includes support for innovative features such as Monotype Imaging's patent-pending SmartHint[TM] technology, designed to enable the high-quality display of East Asian characters scaled to small sizes. The technology combines new methods of character fine-tuning and compression/decompression techniques, without the necessity to incorporate embedded bitmaps to handle the clear display of small-sized text. The iType font engine also supports Fonts in a Box[TM] technology, a method that ensures the full and predictable display of tall characters within limited screen parameters. Custom typefaces, bitmaps, embedded bitmaps, font subsets and linked fonts are also supported by the iType font engine.
Monotype Imaging's WorldType Layout Engine includes intelligence to automatically interpret linguistic traits that are part of complex writing systems such as Arabic, Hebrew and Indic scripts. WorldType Layout Engine capabilities include bi-directional text flow, contextual character substitution and positioning, ligature and accent placement and the intermixing of text and graphics.
ESQ Mobile fonts are sourced from the Monotype([R]), ITC([R]) and Linotype([R]) collections and are tailored for exceptional viewing on small screens. Designs are available to complement the look-and-feel of various mobile offerings. ESQ Mobile fonts for East Asian markets are based on Monotype Imaging's stroke-based font technology, enhanced with the company's SmartHint technique.
