Burnham Institute for Medical Research Elects New Trustees

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Burnham Institute for Medial Research (Burnham) today announced the election of six new members to its Board of Trustees. Burnham's Board of Trustees is comprised of philanthropists, business and industry thought leaders, entrepreneurs, and renowned scientists.
Newly-elected Board members include:
Brigitte M. Bren, President and CEO of International Strategic Planning Robert J. Lauer, CPA, Principal at Lauer, Georgatos & Associates, AP Robert A. Mandell, Chairman, Meritage Homes, Inc., of Central Florida Jan Tuttleman, Ph.D., Consultant, Progenetor, Inc Andrew J. Viterbi, Ph.D., President of Viterbi Group, LLC Gayle E. Wilson, California's First Lady from 1991-1999
"We are honored to attract this distinguished group of Trustees, each of whom brings outstanding talent to our Board," said Chairman Nicolas Nierenberg. BRIGITTE M. BREN
Brigitte M. Bren is President and Chief Executive Officer of International Strategic Planning, an international consulting firm she co-founded in 1991. Previously, she served as counsel to Arter & Hadden, LLP and Vice President of International Marketing for Mark Goodson Productions. Mrs. Bren graduated magna cum laude from the College of Honors at University of California, Los Angeles and earned her J.D. at Loyola Law School. She serves on the boards of Ambassadors International, Inc., Ambassadors Group, Inc., the Cancer Legal Resource Center in Los Angeles, and the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
ROBERT J. LAUER
Robert "Bob" J. Lauer, CPA, is a Principal at Lauer, Georgatos & Covel, APC. Mr. Lauer is a Trustee of The Burnham Foundation and previously served as a Trustee of the Burnham Institute for Medical Research for seven years. In that capacity he chaired the Board's Finance Committee.
ROBERT A. MANDELL
Robert A. Mandell is Chairman of Meritage Homes of Florida Inc,. Mr. Mandell served as Chairman and CEO of Greater Homes from 1998 - 2005, prior to the company's acquisition by Meritage. A long time resident of Orlando, Mr. Mandell is credited with a distinguished record of public service in Central Florida. Currently, he serves on the boards of University of Central Florida Foundation, Florida Hospital and the audit and finance committees of Adventist Health Systems, Inc., the Wachovia National Bank Advisory Board for the Central Florida Region, and as Trustee for the OK Corrall Ranch, Colorado, owned by the Paul Newman "Hole in the Wall Gang". Previously, Mr. Mandell has served as Chairman of the Florida Environmental Regulation Commission and Chairman of Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority. He earned his undergraduate and law degrees from University of Florida and an OPM degree from the Harvard Business School.
JAN S. TUTTLEMAN, Ph.D.
Jan S. Tuttleman, Ph.D., has extensive experience as an angel investor in a variety of biotechnology and high technology startup companies, as well as venture capital funds. She is a business development and licensing consultant with Progenetor, Inc., an early stage cardiovascular stem cell company. She earned her Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Pennsylvania and her MBA from The Rady School of Management at University of California, San Diego. Dr. Tuttleman currently serves as a vice-president of the San Diego Jewish Community Foundation, a member of the executive committee of the San Diego United Jewish Federation, and was the founding chair of the Jewish Women's Foundation of San Diego. She is a board member of Vision of Children, the Rady School of Management Alumni Association, and San Diego Grantmakers. In 2006, the Jewish Family Service recognized Dr. Tuttleman with its Mitzvah Service Award.
ANDREW J. VITERBI
Andrew J. Viterbi, Ph.D., creator of the Viterbi Algorithm, is President of Viterbi Group, LLC and The Viterbi Family Foundation. Dr. Viterbi earned undergraduate and master's degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. He is co-founder of QUALCOMM and LINKABIT Corporation and, in academia, earned appointments as a professor at University of California, Los Angeles and University of California, San Diego, where he is currently Professor Emeritus. Dr. Viterbi is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and he is a former member of the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the University of Southern California, and is a past Chair of the Jewish Community Foundation.
GAYLE E. WILSON
Gayle E. Wilson served as California's First Lady from 1991 - 1999. She attended Stanford University, where she earned her Phi Beta Kappa key and a degree in biology. She currently serves on the boards of California Institute of Technology, the College Access Foundation of California, Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, Gilead Sciences, Inc., and the San Diego Consortium for Regenerative Medicine. Mrs. Wilson is Chairman of the Advisory Board of the California State Summer School for Math and Science (COSMOS).
