'Diversity in Advertising Career Day' Set for September 20th in New York City
Business Wire, June 6, 2007
Adweek Magazines to Sponsor Inaugural Event at New York Hilton
NEW YORK -- Diversity in Advertising Career Day (www.diacareerday.com), created to provide a forum where multi-cultural professionals can network and explore career opportunities in the advertising industry, will be held at the New York Hilton on Thursday, September 20, 2007, sponsored by Adweek, Brandweek, Mediaweek and Marketing y Medios magazines.
"Smart agencies, corporate advertisers and media have come to recognize the value to their bottom line by creating a diverse work force," said Wright Ferguson, executive vice president of sales at Adweek Magazines. "The staging of Diversity in Advertising Career Day provides them an unprecedented opportunity to locate, recruit and attract qualified candidates from culturally diverse communities."
Special 'Diversity in Advertising Careers' Sections in Adweek Magazines
To expand the impact and reach of the inaugural event, Mr. Ferguson said a special advertising opportunity will be offered -- a "Diversity in Advertising Careers" section to let event exhibitors and others deliver business-diversity messages to the entire readership of all Adweek Magazines.
Lew Shomer, president of Shomex Productions of Los Angeles, a pioneer and leader in presenting job fairs nationwide for nearly 25 years and the creator of Diversity in Advertising Career Day, said that the impetus for the event came in September of 2006. "That is when the New York City Commission on Human Rights reached agreements with 16 leading advertising agencies whereby each agreed to recruit more minorities, especially Blacks, to also diversify senior management, and to allow City officials to monitor the diversification process," he said.
Backed by Industry, Community and Educational Leadership
Along with sponsorship by Adweek Magazines, Diversity in Advertising Career Day has won the support of an outstanding group of cross- and multi-cultural community, professional and academic partners, including the NAACP's New York State Conference of Branches, the National Association of Minority Media Executives, the Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies, the Asian American Advertising Federation, the National Society of Hispanic MBAs, Portada, TalentZoo.com, the Advertising Research Foundation, Advertising Women in New York, New York University and its Stern School of Business, the City College of New York, the City University of New York and its Baruch School of Business, Columbia University, Florida State University, Howard University, the New York Institute of Technology, and the State University of New York and its Fashion Institute of Technology.
"With the backing of these highly respected and influential organizations, combined with the sponsorship of Adweek Magazines, Diversity in Advertising Career Day should attract a diverse audience of skilled and motivated minority professionals," Mr. Shomer said.
"Diversity in Advertising Career Day," he said, "will provide an exciting and efficient forum for agencies, advertisers and media companies to source employees with many of the skill sets needed for mid- and senior-level positions. And, we believe that it has the potential to literally change the face of the advertising industry by the way the industry perceives diversity and realizes its ability to do something about it."
