Multi-Center Studies Clearly Demonstrate Clinical Utility of CTCs across Colorectal, Breast and Prostate Cancers
HUNTINGDON VALLEY, Pa. -- Immunicon Corporation (NASDAQ-GM:IMMC) has released highlights from podium presentations made at the 43rd Annual American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting June 1-5 in Chicago. These presentations describe the results of multi-center, international clinical trials of patients with advanced prostate and colorectal cancers, and the use of Circulating Tumor Cell (CTC) measurement to predict patient survival and as an aid to select patients for and monitor the effectiveness of the targeted therapy. The presentations can be viewed from www.asco.org

The study presented by Neal J. Meropol, MD, director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Program at Fox Chase Cancer Center, discussed findings that showed that CTCs are the strongest independent predictor of survival in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, and that patients with Favorable CTC after 3-5 weeks of therapy lived more than 3 times as long as those with Unfavorable CTC. Dr. Meropol noted that new treatment options for metastatic colorectal cancer have recently expanded, highlighting the need for biomarkers to guide and monitor therapy.
In the study presented by Jose Moreno, MD, clinical associate professor of Urology at Thomas Jefferson University, CTC measurement after initiation of therapy in men with hormone refractory prostate cancer were highly predictive of outcome and delivered more reliable information about patient survival than the change in Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) at all of the time points tested. Dr. Moreno's presentation included the comparative information on the clinical significance of CTC's and he commented that this is the third prospective pivotal study showing the prognostic and predictive value of CTCs in metastatic carcinomas.
In Monday's Clinical Science Symposium, Johan de Bono MD FRCP MSc PhD, Senior Lecturer and Consultant at the Institute of Cancer Research of the Royal Marsden Hospital, in the UK highlighted the need for CTC studies to explore patient selection, particularly in advanced refractory prostate cancer and emphasized the potential value of CTCs in assessing pharmacodynamics and tumor resistance. Dr. de Bono used results from Pfizer's Phase I, II CP-751,871 studies targeting IGF1-R and results from Abiraterone (CYP17i) Phase I/II study targeting the androgen receptor in which CTC measurement was used in combination with Fluorescence In-situ Hybridization to support his conclusions.
Byron D. Hewett, CEO and President of Immunicon Corporation commented, "Since the CellSearch[TM] Circulating Tumor Cell Test received FDA-clearance in December 2006 for monitoring patients with advanced breast cancer, we have been encouraged by studies showing the clinical utility of CTC measurement across metastatic breast, prostate and colorectal cancers. Regardless of the type of therapy, line of therapy, or time of sampling, CTC have been shown to be clinically significant across a variety of carcinomas."
At ASCO, there were eleven abstracts or posters presented that utilized Immunicon's CellTracks[R] technology. The 43rd annual ASCO conference, the premier educational and scientific event in the oncology community, began Friday, June 1st and closed Tuesday, June 5.
