Mirapoint Advises on Effective Spam Blocking at Secure IT Conference

Business Wire, March 26, 2007

Tim Chiu Discusses Techniques for Fighting Unwanted and Unauthorized Email in Today's Quickly Evolving Spam Environment

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Mirapoint, the secure messaging expert, today announced that Tim Chiu, director of Worldwide Application Engineering, will be speaking on "Evolving Anti-Spam Mechanisms: Is Your Spam Blocker as Good Today as it Was a Year Ago?" at the Secure IT Conference to be held March 27-29, 2007 in Sacramento, Calif.

Spam continues with unabated force and volume, threatening to undermine the productivity and flexibility email brings to higher education and enterprise communications. In fact, the threat of spam and other email viruses are a top concern for IT managers who struggle to keep pace with increasingly sophisticated attacks on their messaging systems. Ineffective spam blocking not only creates vulnerabilities within the email infrastructure but also consumes network and IT resources. According to the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group (MAAWG), in cooperation with some of the world's largest Internet service providers, approximately 80 percent of Internet traffic today is the result of abusive email.

"An effective anti-spam campaign should involve multiple layers of the network and reflect a keen understanding of the evolving spam environment," said Tim Chiu, director, Worldwide Application Engineering, Mirapoint. "With today's technologies used to their fullest capability, educational institutions can achieve successful spam blocking at the network edge, freeing critical storage capacity and unencumbering IT. For example, with the Mirapoint RazorGate[R], universities can block approximately 98 percent of spam with zero false positives."

During his presentation, Chiu will examine the historical accuracy of several anti-spam mechanisms, highlight key milestones in spam evolution and discuss effective spam blocking at different layers in the network. Information regarding the tutorial is included below.
