East Carolina University Enables Collaboration Outside the Classroom with Saba-Centra
Business Wire, March 6, 2007
Real-Time Online Learning Solution Allows Students and Professors to Interact, Socialize and Build Communities, Regardless of Physical Location
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. -- Saba (NASDAQ:SABA), the premier Human Capital Management (HCM) software and services provider, has announced that East Carolina University (ECU) has deployed Saba-Centra Live. East Carolina leads an academic trend in which more and more universities are leveraging collaborative online technologies to allow remote students access to virtual classes and the valuable social networking benefits of the on-campus learning experience.
Using Centra, ECU's 5,000 remote students can access live and archived course material, interact with staff and guest lecturers, and collaborate with fellow students via audio and video. In addition, the Saba-Centra Live system, a synchronous learning platform available to all faculty, allows professors to collaborate on curriculum design and provide guidance to students after hours.
"Saba-Centra has enabled us to provide students with a fully collaborative learning experience, regardless of their physical location. Remote students, who once had no chance of attending college, benefit from close interaction with peers and professors and graduate having had daily experience of using the latest collaborative technologies," said Sharon Collins, Saba-Centra Administrator for Academic Outreach at ECU. "Online social interaction is a daily reality for students today so it's a logical step to integrate these technologies into the university's learning programs. For instance, we now have 300 students in the middle of the night, collaborating online and exchanging information."
Saba-Centra integrates with ECU's course management program, Blackboard, and allows students to upload and share PowerPoint presentations over the Internet. Users can also participate in real-time discussions using audio connections or web cameras. Students can also respond to yes-or-no polls and "raise" their hands with a click of their mouse. Lectures are also recorded so students in different time zones don't have to miss valuable courses.
"ECU needed a solution that integrated with its existing technologies while delivering a significant improvement in the student experience and addressing the day-to-day resourcing challenges," said Bobby Yazdani, CEO of Saba. "This deployment, like other Saba-Centra installations at dozens of leading colleges and universities, demonstrates Saba's commitment to meeting the rigorous requirements of academic learning programs."
East Carolina University (ECU) was founded in 1907 to alleviate a severe shortage of teachers in eastern North Carolina, and has been recognized as a leader in distance education for more than 50 years. It was one of the first schools in the nation to offer a degree completely over the Internet. ECU has grown to become an emerging national research university focusing in distance education.
