Major Energy Savings Achieved in California Preschool to Be Highlighted

Business Wire, May 10, 2007

New Program Achieving Energy-Saving Improvements at Hundreds of California Preschool Sites; California PUC President, Southern California Edison Official to Appear

LOS ANGELES -- California's preschools are now home to one of the most far-reaching efforts in America's schools to reduce energy consumption. The Low Income Investment Fund (LIIF) will provide an update on the innovative program known as the California Preschool Energy Efficiency Program (CPEEP). A representative of Southern California Edison, which provided the lead sponsorship grant for CPEEP, will introduce Michael Peevey, president of the California Public Utility Commission, at the event. Other community representatives will also attend the May 11, 2007 news event at the Holmes Avenue Children's Center.

CPEEP is part of the California Public Utility Commission's 2006-2008 Energy Efficiency Program and is funded by the state's utility customers through Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas and Electric, and Pacific Gas and Electric. CPEEP provides energy efficiency upgrades and retrofits to child care facilities throughout California. The program replaces older, energy-intensive equipment, improving the spaces for the children, reducing the amount of energy used, and subsequently the operational costs for the centers. The reduction of energy lowers demand for power on the state's electric grid.

CPEEP brings together several key organizations and programs, including California Head Start Association, and the California Child Care Resource and Referral Network. The California Department of Education supports CPEEP's goals. Intergy Corporation assists LIIF with the technical aspects of the program.

The May 11th news event will showcase one of CPEEP's first clients, Mexican American Opportunity Fund (MAOF), which is the largest Latino-oriented, family services organization in the United States offering high quality social services and programs to those communities where the need is the greatest. CPEEP is helping several MAOF centers in Los Angeles become more energy efficient with equipment up-grades and retrofits that will save the organization about $40,000 annually.

News event speakers will include:

-- Low Income Investment Fund President and CEO Nancy O. Andrews;

-- Gene Rodrigues, director of energy efficiency, Southern California Edison

-- California Head Start Association Executive Director Edward Condon.

-- Peter Lai, senior utilities engineer, California Public Utility Commission;

A tour of the Holmes Avenues facility will be led by Richard Fox, director of engineering for Intergy Corporation. Fox will explain the retrofits and other equipment upgrades that have been made.

TO PARTICIPATE: You are invited to participate in this live news conference from 1:30 -- 2:30 p.m. PST on Friday, May 11, 2007 at The Holmes Preschool, located at 6110 Holmes Avenue, Los Angeles.
