Massachusetts Psychiatric Society Commemorates Mental Health Month with its 2007 Annual Meeting

Wellesley, Mass. - May is Mental Health Month. To commemorate this, the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society (MPS) is holding its 2007 Annual Meeting today, May 3. President-elect Eugene J. Fierman, MD, in private practice with his psychiatrist partners, Gregory Harris, Ann Potter and Phil Burke in Brookline, will be installed as MPS's new president. Current MPS President Robert L. Pyles, MD, a former president of the American Psychoanalytic Association, will conclude his term and offer a closing address. MPS also will present six "Outstanding Psychiatrist of the Year" Awards and honor 29 new Distinguished Fellows.

The Honorable Salvatore F. DiMasi, Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, will give the keynote address. In addition, on behalf of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), MPS will present Speaker DiMasi with a Special Recognition Award.

The results of the 2007/08 MPS Election will also be announced. Todd Holzman, MD, of Harvard Vanguard, will be the incoming President-Elect. Mark Hauser, MD, Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and President of On-Site Psychiatric Services, will be the incoming Treasurer.

On behalf of the APA, MPS will also present Dr. John Iwuc, Co-Chair of the MPS Disaster Readiness Committee, with the 2007 Bruno Lima Award for Disaster Psychiatry.

The MPS "Outstanding Psychiatrist of the Year" awardees are:

* For Research: Joseph Biederman, MD, Chief of Clinical and Research Services in Pediatric Psychopharmacology and Chief of the Adult ADHD Program at Massachusetts General Hospital; Chief of Pediatric Psychopharmacology at McLean Hospital.

* For Lifetime Achievement: Mary Jane England, MD, President of Regis College; formerly Associate Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health; and former President of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).

* For Clinical Psychiatry: Peggy L. Johnson, MD, Vice Chair of Clinical Psychiatry at Boston Medical Center; Medical Director of Behavioral Health Services of the Boston Medical Center.

* For Psychiatric Education: Daniel W. Rosenn, MD, MSPH, Leading expert on the treatment of Asperger's Syndrome; Founder of the Asperger's Association of New England.

* For Advancement of the Profession: Edward R. Shapiro, MD, Medical Director and CEO of the Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge, MA.

* For Public Sector Psychiatry: Jeffrey G. Stovall, MD, Medical Director of Outpatient Services for Community Healthlink in Worcester; Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the UMass Medical School in Worcester.
