Business Wire, May 7, 2007
WALTHAM, Mass. -- Brandeis University announced today that Bruce R. Magid, Ph.D., has been appointed dean of the Brandeis International Business School, effective July 1, 2007.
"Bruce Magid offers a rare ability to blend both academic leadership and professional practice within our global business school,'' Brandeis Provost Marty Krauss said. "We are thrilled to have him join our team."
Magid is currently dean of the College of Business at San Jose State University. In that position, he has raised the profile of the college, expanded its faculty, and founded the new Lucas Graduate School of Business. Prior to this, Dr. Magid was the founding executive director of MSU Global, Michigan State University's on-line and global distance education business unit.
"I am honored and excited to lead IBS and join the Brandeis community," Magid said. "IBS is well positioned to develop principled global leaders, encourage influential research, and forge partnerships with corporations and public institutions. It is well on its way to joining the top echelon of international business and finance schools by providing students and business with the capabilities to succeed in an increasingly competitive and integrated global economy."
Before entering academic administration, Magid worked for two decades at Bank of America. As director of the bank's international economic and policy research organization, he managed a professional staff of economists located on four continents. Before leaving the bank to pursue his interests in academia, Magid was a managing director and senior vice president responsible for corporate finance activities in Latin America.
Magid holds a multidisciplinary Ph.D. in international economics, business law and comparative politics from the Fletcher School at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. He also earned a masters degree and a masters in law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School. He holds a bachelor's degree in foreign service from Georgetown University, School of Foreign Service. In keeping with the global orientation of IBS, Magid is bilingual and has lived and worked in Latin America.
"Brandeis searched internationally for a proven leader who could take our global business school to the next level,'' said Professor Ben Gomes-Casseres, who chaired the search committee. "We are delighted that Bruce Magid accepted this challenge."
Magid will succeed F. Trenery Dolbear Jr., who is currently serving as acting dean of IBS. Last year, Professor Peter A. Petri, founding dean of IBS, returned to the school's faculty after serving 12 years in the leadership position. Magid will hold an endowed chair as dean of IBS.
Characterized by academic excellence since its founding in 1948, Brandeis University has combined the faculty and resources of a world-class research university with the intimacy and personal attention of a small liberal arts college. Brandeis International Business School focuses on educating principled leaders in business, economics and finance for the global economy. Founded in 1994, the school educates nearly 400 students from 60 countries and serves as a unique international platform for graduate business study.
