Fairchild Semiconductor's Green FPS™ Power Switches Increase Efficiency and Reduce EMI in Power Supply Designs

Business Wire, Nov 16, 2007

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) helps designers reach high efficiency levels to meet stringent energy efficiency standards, low-standby power and EMI regulations worldwide with their new Green FPS switches, the FSQ0765R and FSQ0565R. These power switches feature Fairchild's proprietary valley switching, hybrid control and inherent frequency modulation, resulting in reduced switching losses by up to 500mW and EMI by up to 5dB over hard-switch converter topologies. These switches are instrumental in meeting energy regulations specified by the California Energy Commission (CEC), EU Code of Conduct and Group for Energy Efficient Appliances (GEEA). As with all of Fairchild's Green FPS products, the FSQ0765R and FSQ0565R feature advanced burst mode operation to reduce standby power consumption and minimize audible noise - critical for meeting the 1 Watt Initiative.

Fairchild's proprietary valley switching operation enables the MOSFET to turn on with minimum drain voltage and offers inherent frequency modulation resulting in a dramatic reduction in EMI noise. Additionally, it also enables these converters to perform soft switching, therefore increasing power conversion efficiency while drastically reducing heat generation. The hybrid control technique makes the power switch operate in continuous-current-mode (CCM) at low line and in valley switched discontinuous-current-mode (DCM) at high line, preventing any power deterioration at low line operation.

The Green FPS FSQ0765R and FSQ0565R also ensure system reliability by offering excellent surge characteristics as well as various protection features including overload protection (OLP), over-voltage protection (OVP), abnormal over-current protection (AOCP), internal thermal shutdown (TSD) with hysteresis, output short protection (OSP) and under-voltage lockout (UVLO).

These highly integrated Green FPS devices are part of Fairchild's comprehensive Green FPS portfolio that simplifies design and improves both efficiency and system reliability for applications such as LCD TVs, PDP TVs, DVD RW and set-top boxes. They play a pivotal role in helping designers meet energy-efficiency, EMI and low-standby regulations and contribute to a greener world. For instance, if one percent of the households in the U.S. converted to set-top boxes that meet the 1-Watt standby power initiative using Fairchild components this would save enough energy in one year to power 3,954 average U.S. households.

The FSQ0765R and FSQ0565R utilize lead-free (Pb-free) plating and, along with all of Fairchild's products, are designed to meet the requirements of the European Union's Directive on the restriction of the use of certain substances (RoHS).
