SUPERVALU Inc. and Two Affiliated Companies Purchase a License Under the Ronald A. Katz Technology Licensing, L.P. Patents

LOS ANGELES -- SUPERVALU Inc. (NYSE: SVU), one of the largest companies in the United States grocery channel with annual sales approaching $40 billion, based in Minneapolis, MN, as well as two of its affiliated companies, New Albertson's Inc. and Albertson's LLC, have purchased a license under the patent portfolio held by Ronald A. Katz Technology Licensing, L.P. and licensed through its affiliate, A2D, L.P.
The nonexclusive license covers services offered by SUPERVALU, New Albertson's Inc. and Albertson's LLC in the "Automated Health Care Services" Field of Use including customer service delivered through automated systems and live agents. Other terms of the license were not disclosed.
The patents held by Ronald A. Katz Technology Licensing, L.P. cover a wide range of interactive technology including automated forms of: customer service, prescription refill services, securities trading, merchandising, prepaid services, telephone conferences, registration, home shopping, as well as functions involved in securing information from databases by telephone, interactive cable transactions, and various other uses of toll free and local numbers.
"Many of our leading pharmacies such as Acme, bigg's, Cub, Osco, Savon, Shop 'n Save, and Supervalu offer 'Express Prescription Refill' services or 'EASYFILL' services over the phone, which utilize many of the inventions in this portfolio of patents. Customers can, for example, dial in 24 hours a day, enter their prescription number and the last four digits of their phone number in order to quickly request a refill of their prescription. There are over 200 companies with license rights under this portfolio, including over 25 energy and utility companies. Mr. Katz is the named inventor on a large number of patents primarily in the fields of telecommunications and computing. He also formed Telecredit, Inc., the nation's first on-line real time credit and check cashing authorization system, and was awarded a patent as co-inventor of that technology.
