Summary
Telekomunikacja Polska SA (TPSA) is the incumbent fixed-line telecommunications operator in Poland. At the end of June 2007, the company had a total of 9.8 million lines in service.
Telekomunikacja Polska Group (TP Group), which comprises TPSA and its subsidiaries, is the principal supplier of telecommunications services in Poland. TPSA provides services including fixed-line telecommunications (local calls, as well as domestic and international long-distance), ISDN, voice mail, dial-up and fixed access to the Internet, and voice over IP (VoIP). Through its subsidiary Polska Telefonia Komorkowa-Centertel (PTK Centertel), TP Group is one of Poland's three DCS 1800 and GSM 900 mobile telecommunications providers. PTK Centertel also provides also 3G UMTS services. In addition, TP Group provides leased lines, radio-communications, and other telecommunications value-added services, sells telecommunications equipment, produces electronic phone cards, and provides data transmission, telephone directories, multimedia services, and various Internet services.
TPSA was established on December 4, 1991, as a joint-stock company of the Polish State Treasury and began operating in January 1992. The company evolved from the former state enterprise, and its predecessor, Polska Poczta, Telegraf i Telefon (Polish Post, Telegraph and Telephone). As at June 30, 2007, TPSA was 47.61%-owned by France Telecom SA, with other shareholders (43.39%) holding the majority of the remaining shares.
